CHAPTER 15 — THE COUNTDOWN

71:59:42
The timer continued to tick.
Every second echoed through Noah's mind.
No sender.
No location.
No way to trace it.
Yet every phone in the house displayed the exact same countdown.
Emma looked at Noah.
"What happens when it reaches zero?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
Within an hour, the Carter home became a fortress.
Federal agents surrounded the property.
Snipers watched from nearby rooftops.
Bomb technicians searched every room.
Cybersecurity specialists examined every device.
Nothing.
The countdown couldn't be removed.
Phones were turned off.
The timer remained.
Batteries were taken out.
The timer continued.
New phones were issued.
The countdown appeared again.
It was as if someone had reached into reality itself.
At FBI headquarters, Agent Olivia Grant gathered her team.
"This isn't intimidation."
One analyst frowned.
"What is it, then?"
Olivia stared at the photograph of Richard Carter.
"It's choreography."
The room fell silent.
"They don't want us frightened."
"They want us moving exactly where they expect."
Marcus folded his arms.
"So every decision we make..."
"...is already part of their plan."
Olivia nodded.
"And that's what scares me."
Richard Carter hadn't spoken since his mysterious visitor left prison.
For three days, he refused meals.
Ignored guards.
Ignored lawyers.
Ignored everyone.
Until one name was mentioned.
"Noah Carter is requesting to see you."
Richard immediately stood.
"Bring him in."
Noah entered the prison interview room alone.
For several seconds...
Father and son simply looked at one another.
Richard finally broke the silence.
"You shouldn't have come."
Noah remained standing.
"Tell me who he is."
Richard smiled sadly.
"You still think there's only one man."
"There isn't?"
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No."
"There never was."
Richard leaned closer.
"You found my notebook."
"Yes."
"You think it contains everything."
"It doesn't?"
Richard laughed bitterly.
"It contains the names I was allowed to know."
Noah frowned.
"You built the organization."
"No."
Richard's eyes lost all pride.
"I inherited it."
The words landed like a hammer.
Noah's heart pounded.
"From who?"
Richard looked toward the security camera.
"They're listening."
"No, they aren't."
Richard smiled.
"They always are."
He reached into his pocket.
The guards immediately rushed forward.
Instead of a weapon...
Richard removed an old silver coin.
One side displayed an eagle.
The other...
A strange symbol Noah had never seen.
Three circles connected by a single line.
Richard quietly placed it on the table.
"If you ever see this..."
"...run."
Back at headquarters...
Olivia burst into the operations room.
"We have a problem."
Marcus looked up.
"What happened?"
She threw several classified files onto the table.
"I searched every unsolved corruption case from the last forty years."
Ethan frowned.
"And?"
"They all have this symbol."
She pointed to the image of Richard's coin.
Three circles.
One line.
The same mark appeared in investigations across six different states.
Every case ended the same way.
Witnesses vanished.
Evidence disappeared.
Investigators retired unexpectedly.
Or died.
Emma refused to let fear control her.
She took Lucas and Sophie to school herself.
Daniel slept peacefully in his stroller.
For a moment...
Everything felt almost normal.
Until Lucas stopped walking.
"Mom..."
Emma followed his gaze.
Across the street...
A young woman stood holding balloons.
She smiled warmly at Daniel.
Then she quietly released one balloon into the sky.
The balloon was black.
Emma's stomach tightened.
The woman walked away without looking back.
Tied to the balloon string...
Was a tiny white envelope.
Inside...
A single ultrasound photograph.
Emma froze.
It wasn't hers.
It couldn't be.
Then she looked closer.
The date.
It was the day of her first pregnancy scan.
The very photo Richard had once held in his hands.
Someone else had it.
Someone who should never have seen it.
On the back...
Five handwritten words.
We've watched since the beginning.
That night...
The countdown reached...
48:00:00
Exactly halfway.
Suddenly, every light in the Carter home went out.
Emergency generators activated.
Then failed.
Darkness swallowed the house.
Children screamed upstairs.
Noah grabbed a flashlight and ran.
Emma raced behind him.
Daniel began crying.
For twenty terrifying seconds...
The family could hear footsteps inside the house.
Not running.
Walking.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
When the lights returned...
Nothing appeared stolen.
No broken windows.
No forced entry.
Only one thing had changed.
A family photograph hanging in the hallway.
Originally...
It showed Noah holding Emma's hand.
Now...
Someone had cut Noah out of the picture with surgical precision.
Only Emma and the children remained.
Folded neatly beneath the frame...
Was another note.
We only remove what doesn't belong.
Olivia immediately reviewed every surveillance camera.
Again...
There was nothing.
Not one person entered.
Not one person left.
Marcus slammed his fist onto the table.
"This is impossible!"
Olivia stared silently at the blank screens.
"No."
"It's worse."
"What do you mean?"
She looked at Noah.
"They're already inside our system."
The countdown continued.
35:12:18
35:12:17
35:12:16
Every second felt heavier.
No one slept.
No one relaxed.
Even the children sensed something was wrong.
Lucas quietly approached Noah late that evening.
"Dad..."
Noah smiled weakly.
"What is it?"
Lucas hesitated.
"I didn't tell anyone because I was scared."
Noah knelt beside him.
"You can tell me anything."
Lucas reached into his backpack.
He removed an old sketchbook.
"I've been drawing him."
Noah opened the book.
Every page showed the same man.
Standing far away.
Watching.
Outside school.
Outside the hospital.
Outside their house.
At the playground.
Even outside the courtroom during Richard's trial.
Always the same face.
Always wearing a dark gray coat.
Always smiling.
Noah felt the blood drain from his face.
"Lucas..."
"When did you start seeing him?"
Lucas answered quietly.
"I don't know..."
He turned to the very first drawing.
The date was written carefully at the bottom.
Noah stopped breathing.
It was dated...
Six months before Richard Carter was arrested.
Which meant only one thing.
Someone had been watching the Carter family...
Long before Richard fell.
Long before the elevator.
Long before anyone realized they were trapped.
May you like
And whoever that man was...
He had never stopped watching.
