CHAPTER 20 — LEVEL B8

The silver key lay motionless on the steel table.

No one reached for it.

Not immediately.

The words engraved into the metal echoed inside everyone's mind.

LEVEL B8 ACCESS

Marcus broke the silence.

"There can't be another level."

Olivia looked toward the ceiling.

"According to every blueprint..."

"...there shouldn't even be this one."

Emma stared at Noah.

"What if this is another trap?"

Noah picked up the key.

"It probably is."

He closed his fingers around it.

"But Daniel is somewhere inside this nightmare."

"I'm not leaving without him."

The countdown continued.

00:18:42

Every second mattered.

Lucas stepped closer.

"Dad..."

Noah turned.

"If he wanted to kill us..."

"He already had the chance."

The room fell silent.

The boy was right.

The Gray Man had disabled every weapon.

Locked every exit.

Separated them from help.

Yet no one had been harmed.

Not physically.

Marcus frowned.

"So why bring us here?"

Noah looked at the silver key.

"Because he wants us to see something."

At the far end of B7 stood an enormous steel door.

Unlike everything else underground...

It looked brand new.

A single keyhole gleamed beneath a black panel.

Noah inserted the key.

Nothing happened.

Then...

A soft electronic voice echoed through the corridor.

DNA verification required.

A thin needle emerged from the panel.

Without hesitation, Noah placed his thumb against it.

A tiny prick.

One drop of blood.

The machine processed the sample.

Three long seconds passed.

Then...

ACCESS GRANTED.

The steel door slowly opened.

Cold air rushed out.

The staircase descended farther than anyone expected.

One flight.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Finally...

The group reached another massive corridor.

A silver plaque was mounted on the wall.

PROJECT LEGACY

Emma whispered,

"What is Project Legacy?"

No one answered.

Because they were all staring through the glass.

Beyond the reinforced windows stretched a facility unlike anything they had imagined.

Perfectly clean.

Rows of empty workstations.

Medical laboratories.

Training rooms.

Observation chambers.

It wasn't abandoned.

It had been evacuated.

Recently.

Coffee still sat warm on one desk.

Computer screens displayed open files.

Someone had left in a hurry.

Marcus slowly looked around.

"They knew we were coming."

Olivia nodded.

"They wanted us to arrive after they were gone."

Lucas wandered toward one of the computer terminals.

A message filled the screen.

Welcome, Noah Carter.

Another line appeared.

If you are reading this...

...you finally asked the right question.

Noah frowned.

"I never asked anything."

The screen changed.

Exactly.

A video began playing.

The Gray Man appeared once again.

This time...

Without the gray coat.

Without gloves.

Just an ordinary man sitting in a quiet office.

He smiled.

"If you've reached B8..."

"...then Richard is dead."

Emma looked at Noah.

He had known.

The Gray Man continued.

"He was never meant to survive."

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"You murdered him."

The man almost laughed.

"No."

"Richard chose his ending the day he believed he understood the game."

The video switched to dozens of surveillance clips.

Richard meeting politicians.

Richard paying judges.

Richard recruiting officers.

Then...

Another camera angle.

Richard reporting everything.

To someone sitting in darkness.

The face remained hidden.

Only a silhouette.

Emma whispered,

"So there really was someone above him."

Olivia shook her head slowly.

"Maybe."

The screen displayed a sentence in large white letters.

Every organization needs someone to blame.

The Gray Man spoke again.

"Richard believed I was his superior."

"He wasn't entirely wrong."

"But neither was he right."

Noah stepped closer.

"What does that mean?"

The video paused.

Then another voice answered.

Not the Gray Man.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

"We've been waiting for you, Noah."

Emma froze.

"I know that voice."

The monitors around the room suddenly came alive.

Every screen showed the same woman.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

Sharp blue eyes.

She appeared to be in her early sixties.

She smiled warmly.

"Hello, Emma."

Emma's face turned pale.

"No..."

Marcus looked back and forth between them.

"You know her?"

Emma could barely speak.

"My mother..."

The room fell completely silent.

Olivia frowned.

"Emma..."

"You told us your mother died twenty-two years ago."

Emma nodded slowly.

"She did."

The woman on the screen smiled.

"That's what you were supposed to believe."

Noah looked at Emma in disbelief.

The woman continued speaking.

"My name isn't Sarah Bennett."

"It hasn't been for a very long time."

"I have had many names."

Lucas whispered,

"Who is she?"

Emma's hands trembled uncontrollably.

"I don't know anymore."

The woman stood from her chair.

Behind her...

Daniel sat safely inside a playroom.

Laughing.

Playing with wooden blocks.

Completely unharmed.

Emma burst into tears.

"My baby..."

The woman smiled gently.

"I promised he wouldn't be hurt."

Noah stepped toward the screen.

"Give him back."

"I will."

The woman replied calmly.

"When you're ready."

Marcus slammed his fist onto the console.

"What do you want?"

The woman looked directly into the camera.

"I don't want revenge."

"I don't want money."

"I don't even want power."

She paused.

"I want the truth."

Olivia narrowed her eyes.

"What truth?"

The woman smiled.

"The truth about why Project Legacy was created."

She pressed a button.

Every monitor went black.

Only one sentence remained glowing in white letters.

Everything you know about the Harbor Fire...

...is a lie.

Before anyone could react...

The entire facility suddenly lost power.

Emergency lights flashed crimson.

A deafening alarm echoed through B8.

SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIATED

TEN MINUTES TO SYSTEM PURGE

Concrete dust rained from the ceiling.

The floor trembled violently.

Emma grabbed Noah's arm.

"We have to get Daniel!"

Noah looked toward the dark corridor beyond the laboratory.

Somewhere ahead...

His son was waiting.

Somewhere deeper...

Emma's mother was alive.

And somewhere beneath B8...

Someone had just activated a system designed to erase every secret forever.

Noah took a deep breath.

Then ran into the darkness.

Without knowing...

That someone else was already waiting for him.

Someone...

He had never met.

But whose name had been hidden from every file.

Every photograph.

May you like

Every confession.

Every lie.
