CHAPTER 17 — SIX HOURS TO MIDNIGHT

06:00:00

The countdown reached six hours.

No one spoke.

Inside the FBI command center, dozens of monitors glowed in the darkness.

Maps.

Security feeds.

Satellite images.

Every available resource had been redirected to one objective.

Protect the Carter family.

Yet Agent Olivia Grant couldn't ignore the feeling that they were already too late.

Noah stood outside the safe house, staring into the early morning fog.

Emma quietly joined him.

"You haven't slept."

He forced a smile.

"I keep thinking about Richard."

Emma slipped her hand into his.

"He can't hurt us anymore."

Noah looked toward the horizon.

"No."

"But whoever taught him..."

"...still can."

Across the city...

Richard Carter sat alone in his prison cell.

For the first time in years, he requested paper and a pen.

The guard watched through the bars as Richard wrote only three words.

I was wrong.

Nothing more.

He folded the page carefully.

"I need this delivered to Noah Carter."

The guard nodded.

"I'll pass it along."

Richard grabbed the man's wrist.

His voice trembled.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"He has to read it before the countdown ends."

It was the first time anyone had ever seen Richard Carter afraid.

Three hours later...

The letter never reached Noah.

The prison transport officer carrying it disappeared.

His vehicle was found abandoned beneath an overpass.

Engine still running.

Driver's door open.

The envelope was gone.

Meanwhile...

Lucas couldn't stop thinking about the sketchbook.

He spread every drawing across the dining table.

Emma watched quietly.

"What are you looking for?"

Lucas didn't answer.

Instead, he arranged the pictures by date.

Oldest to newest.

Suddenly...

He noticed something.

"Dad..."

Noah walked over.

Lucas pointed to the backgrounds.

"The man never changes."

"What do you mean?"

Lucas held up two drawings made nearly three years apart.

"The buildings change."

"The seasons change."

"But he doesn't."

Same gray coat.

Same haircut.

Same face.

Not older.

Not younger.

Exactly the same.

Emma whispered,

"That's impossible."

Olivia entered carrying another file.

"You need to see this."

She placed several enlarged photographs on the table.

Security images from airports.

Hospitals.

Government buildings.

The same man appeared in all of them.

The oldest photograph...

Was taken twenty-nine years ago.

Marcus frowned.

"You're telling me he hasn't aged?"

Olivia answered quietly.

"No."

Silence filled the room.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

"Either the photographs are fake..."

"...or we're looking for someone else."

Olivia nodded.

"That's what I thought."

She slid one final document across the table.

An intelligence report.

Marked:

CLASSIFIED

Subject:

PROJECT MIRROR

Noah looked up.

"What is Project Mirror?"

Olivia hesitated.

"I don't know."

"The file is mostly redacted."

Only one paragraph remained visible.

Selected operatives receive complete identity reconstruction, allowing multiple individuals to become the same person.

Marcus slowly looked around the room.

"You mean..."

"There may not be one Gray Man."

Olivia finished the sentence.

"There could be dozens."

The countdown reached...

03:00:00

Exactly three hours remained.

Suddenly...

Every television inside the safe house turned on by itself.

Static filled the screens.

Then...

A live video appeared.

Richard Carter.

Inside his prison cell.

Looking directly into the camera.

Noah stared.

"This isn't possible."

Richard began speaking.

"If you're watching this..."

"...then they have already begun."

The timestamp showed the video was live.

But prison officials immediately called.

Richard wasn't in his cell.

He had vanished.

Without opening a single locked door.

Panic spread through headquarters.

Every prison camera was reviewed.

Richard had been sitting alone one moment.

The next...

The image flickered.

For less than half a second.

When it returned...

The cell was empty.

No broken bars.

No tunnel.

No open door.

Nothing.

Marcus whispered,

"How do you disappear from a locked prison?"

No one had an answer.

Then Richard spoke again on the television.

His face looked exhausted.

"I spent thirty years believing I controlled the organization."

A bitter laugh escaped him.

"I was only protecting the real leader."

Emma stepped closer.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"Emma..."

"I'm sorry."

No one expected those words.

Especially Noah.

Richard lowered his head.

"I ruined your life."

"I destroyed my son."

"I stole children."

"I called it loyalty."

"It was cowardice."

Tears filled his eyes.

"I finally understand."

Suddenly...

The screen shook violently.

Richard looked behind him.

His expression changed.

"No..."

Footsteps echoed somewhere beyond the camera.

Heavy.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Richard whispered,

"He's here."

The picture distorted.

A shadow appeared behind him.

Only a silhouette.

Tall.

Wearing a gray coat.

Richard stood.

"You promised my family would never be touched!"

The shadow stopped walking.

A calm voice answered.

"You believed promises."

Richard backed away.

"I built everything for you!"

The voice replied,

"No."

"You built everything for yourself."

The screen filled with static.

A single gunshot echoed.

Emma screamed.

Lucas covered Sophie's eyes.

Daniel began crying upstairs.

The video cut to black.

No signal.

No explanation.

Exactly one minute later...

The FBI received confirmation.

Richard Carter had been found dead inside his prison cell.

One gunshot wound.

No weapon recovered.

Every surveillance camera failed for eight seconds.

The official report listed the cause as:

Unknown.

Noah slowly sat down.

His father was gone.

Before anyone could question him again.

Before he could reveal the leader's name.

The only man who knew the truth...

Had been silenced.

The countdown continued.

00:59:59

Less than one hour remained.

Then every phone in the command center vibrated.

A single message appeared.

Richard was only Chapter One.

Below it...

A live GPS location.

No address.

Only coordinates.

Marcus looked at Olivia.

"What is there?"

She checked the map.

Her face lost all color.

"No..."

Noah stepped forward.

"What?"

Olivia whispered,

"Harbor Financial Center."

The same building.

The same elevator.

The same place where everything had begun.

And according to the timer...

Someone was waiting for them there.
