CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST LIE

CHAPTER 11 — THE LAST LIE

Noah wanted to go alone.

Of course he did.

That was who he had always been.

The firefighter who ran into burning buildings.

The man who believed carrying the weight himself was the same as protecting others.

But this time...

I wouldn't let him.

"You're not going."

Noah looked at me.

"Emma."

"No."

His expression softened.

"This is about Sophie."

"I know."

"She's my daughter."

"I know."

"Then you understand why I have to go."

I stared at him.

"And you understand why you can't."

He frowned.

"What?"

I stepped closer.

"Every time you tried to protect someone by yourself, someone got hurt."

The words landed.

Because they were true.

"Lucas."

He looked down.

"Me."

Silence.

"And our son."

His eyes moved toward my stomach.

I continued.

"You don't get to disappear into danger again and call it protection."

Noah didn't answer.

Because he knew.

For the first time...

He knew I was right.

Ethan studied the location Natalie sent.

An abandoned medical facility outside Seattle.

The same facility connected to Sophie.

The same place where Marcus had spent years recovering.

"The location is suspicious."

Ethan pointed at the map.

"Why?"

"Because nobody knows this place exists anymore."

Marcus nodded.

"I do."

Everyone looked at him.

"You've been there?"

Marcus looked away.

"Once."

"When?"

"The night Sophie disappeared."

Noah froze.

"What?"

Marcus sighed.

"I didn't tell you everything."

Another secret.

Another hidden piece.

I almost laughed.

It seemed everyone in Noah's life had been carrying pieces of a puzzle except me.

"What happened?"

Marcus looked at Noah.

"After the fire at your apartment, I followed the people who took Lucas."

Noah's face changed.

"You found him?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"But I wasn't fast enough."

The room became quiet.

"I found Sophie too."

Noah stepped forward.

"You knew?"

Marcus closed his eyes.

"I knew Natalie had her."

The pain on Noah's face was unbearable.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Adrian threatened you."

Silence.

"He said if I told you, Lucas and Sophie would disappear forever."

Noah's hands trembled.

"And you believed him?"

Marcus looked broken.

"I was wrong."

We created a plan.

Not because we trusted the police.

Not because we knew who was still working with Natalie.

But because we had learned one thing:

The person controlling this game was always watching.

So we had to make them believe they were winning.

Noah would go.

But he wouldn't be alone.

Ethan would track him.

Marcus would stay nearby.

And I...

I would do something Noah hated.

I would take control.

The abandoned facility looked exactly like a place where secrets died.

Broken windows.

Rusting doors.

Empty hallways.

No signs of life.

But we knew better.

Places like this were never empty.

They were full of memories.

Noah entered alone.

The cameras were still working.

We watched from the vehicle.

Then Natalie's voice came through the speakers.

"Welcome home, Noah."

He stopped.

"Natalie."

She appeared on a screen.

Older.

Tired.

But still confident.

"Do you know how long I waited for this moment?"

Noah looked around.

"Where are my daughters?"

Natalie smiled.

"Interesting."

She laughed softly.

"Not 'what do you want?'"

"Where are they?"

"You're still the same."

"No."

Noah's voice changed.

"I'm not."

The screen flickered.

Natalie appeared closer.

"You blame me."

"I blame you for taking my children."

Her expression hardened.

"And I blame you for leaving me."

There it was.

The truth.

Not logic.

Not justice.

Just resentment.

"You chose Emma."

Noah looked down.

"I did."

Natalie's face tightened.

"You admit it?"

"Yes."

The answer surprised her.

"You chose Emma."

Noah continued.

"But I was wrong to hide the truth from her."

A pause.

"I was wrong to abandon Lucas."

A pause.

"I was wrong to believe I could fix everything alone."

Natalie stared.

Because she expected guilt.

She expected excuses.

She didn't expect accountability.

Then a door opened.

Sophie walked out.

Noah stopped breathing.

She looked exactly like Natalie.

But her eyes...

Her eyes looked like Noah's.

"Dad?"

The word was small.

Almost afraid.

Noah broke.

"Sophie."

He took a step forward.

She stepped back.

That hurt more than anything.

Because he understood.

Another child afraid of him.

Another child who knew his name but didn't know him.

"I'm sorry."

Sophie looked confused.

"For what?"

Noah swallowed.

"For not finding you sooner."

Her eyes filled.

"Did you look?"

"Every day."

"Then why did you stop?"

Noah couldn't answer.

Because he never stopped.

But he also never found her.

And sometimes...

The result hurts more than the intention.

Suddenly, Natalie appeared behind Sophie.

Holding a remote.

"Enough."

Noah's expression changed.

"Natalie."

"You ruined everything."

"No."

He looked at Sophie.

"You did."

Her face twisted.

"I loved you."

"No."

The word shocked everyone.

"You loved the idea of me."

Natalie froze.

"You loved the version of me who could save you."

Silence.

"But you never loved who I was."

Her eyes filled with anger.

"You chose her."

Noah looked toward the hidden camera.

Toward me.

"Yes."

The answer was simple.

"I chose Emma."

A tear fell from Natalie's face.

Then she smiled.

A dangerous smile.

"Then she should hear the rest."

My heart stopped.

The screen changed.

A recording appeared.

A recording from seven years ago.

Noah's voice.

Young.

Terrified.

And another voice.

Mine.

But I had never heard this conversation before.

The recording played.

And the first sentence made everyone freeze.

Because it was Noah saying:

"Emma can never know what happened to Sophie."

I stared at the screen.

Noah looked horrified.

"I didn't..."

The recording continued.

"I can't lose Emma."

His younger voice said.

"I can't tell her."

I felt my chest tighten.

Another lie.

Another secret.

But then...

A second voice appeared.

A voice we didn't expect.

A voice that changed everything.

Adrian.

"Then we'll make sure she never finds out."

The recording ended.

Silence.

Because suddenly the truth was different.

Noah had hidden something.

But someone else had used that hidden pain.

Someone else had manipulated everything.

Natalie looked at the camera.

"Now you understand."

She smiled.

"Noah was never innocent."

The lights went out.

A loud explosion echoed.

Smoke filled the room.

Everyone panicked.

Then Ethan shouted through the radio:

"Emma!"

"What?"

"Someone entered the facility."

"Who?"

A pause.

Then his voice became terrified.

"The person who has been controlling Natalie."

I froze.

"Who?"

Ethan whispered:

"Your father-in-law."

I stopped breathing.

Noah's father.

A man who had been silent throughout everything.

A man nobody suspected.

A man who knew the entire family history.

May you like

And the person walking out of the smoke...

was the last person we expected.
