CHAPTER 13 — THE PACKAGE THAT SHOULD NEVER HAVE EXISTED

One year had passed since Richard Carter was sentenced to life in prison.

The headlines faded.

The reporters stopped calling.

The Carter family slowly learned how to breathe again.

Emma spent her mornings caring for their newborn son, Daniel.

Lucas had finally started calling Noah "Dad."

Not every day.

Not naturally.

But often enough that Noah still smiled every time he heard it.

Sophie had become the loudest child in the house.

Her laughter filled rooms that had once been haunted by silence.

For the first time in years...

Peace felt real.

Or at least...

It looked real.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, the doorbell rang.

Emma opened the front door.

No one was there.

Only a small black package.

No return address.

No shipping label.

Just one sentence written in silver ink.

FOR THE WOMAN WHO SURVIVED.

Emma frowned.

"Did you order something?"

Noah walked over.

"No."

He picked up the box.

It felt surprisingly heavy.

Marcus happened to arrive for breakfast.

The moment he saw the package...

His expression changed.

"Don't open it."

Emma looked at him.

"Why?"

Marcus swallowed.

"Because Richard used to send boxes exactly like this."

The room suddenly became quiet.

Ethan arrived twenty minutes later.

The package was scanned.

No explosives.

No chemicals.

Nothing dangerous.

Finally...

Noah slowly lifted the lid.

Inside...

There was only one object.

A digital voice recorder.

Old.

Dust-covered.

Its battery indicator was somehow still glowing green.

Attached to it was a note.

Play me alone.

Emma looked at Noah.

"No."

"We listen together."

Noah nodded.

He pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Five long seconds.

Then...

A familiar voice.

Richard Carter.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then I was right."

Everyone froze.

Richard's recorded voice remained calm.

"You believed arresting me ended everything."

A short laugh.

"It didn't."

Emma felt ice crawl down her spine.

"You only found one snake."

"There are still many inside the nest."

Marcus slowly lowered his head.

"No..."

Richard continued.

"I built something far larger than my family."

"My arrest only removed one piece."

"The others are already adapting."

Ethan exchanged a worried glance with Noah.

Richard had always spoken confidently.

But this...

This sounded prepared.

Like he expected this exact moment.

The recording continued.

"Noah..."

"I know you're listening."

"You think you've won."

"You think Emma forgave you."

"You think your children are finally safe."

Another pause.

"You are wrong."

Emma instinctively held Daniel closer.

Richard's voice softened.

"Look behind the nursery wall."

The recording ended.

Silence.

No one moved.

No one breathed.

Lucas finally whispered,

"What does he mean?"

Noah ran upstairs.

Emma followed.

The nursery looked exactly as it always had.

Blue walls.

White crib.

Stuffed animals.

Family photos.

Nothing unusual.

Noah examined every corner.

Marcus searched the windows.

Ethan checked the ceiling.

Nothing.

Then Sophie quietly pointed.

"Daddy..."

"The bear moved."

Everyone looked.

A large wooden teddy bear decoration hung on the wall.

Emma frowned.

"It wasn't tilted yesterday."

Marcus carefully removed it.

Behind it...

A small steel safe was hidden inside the wall.

Every face turned pale.

Emma whispered,

"How long has that been there?"

No one answered.

The safe required four numbers.

Noah tried Daniel's birthday.

Wrong.

Emma tried their wedding anniversary.

Wrong.

Marcus suddenly looked thoughtful.

"The elevator."

"What?"

"The date."

"The accident."

Noah entered the numbers.

The lock clicked open.

Emma felt her knees weaken.

Inside...

Three items.

A thick black notebook.

A silver key.

And another envelope.

Written by hand.

Not yet.

Emma carefully opened the envelope.

Inside was only one page.

No signature.

No fingerprints.

Only one sentence.

If you opened this, they already know where you live.

Lucas looked toward the windows.

Every curtain suddenly felt transparent.

Marcus immediately reached for his phone.

"We need police protection."

Ethan nodded.

"I'm calling federal agents."

Noah stared at the notebook.

His hands trembled.

"I don't think we're the only ones looking for this."

The notebook contained names.

Hundreds of names.

Police officers.

Firefighters.

Judges.

Lawyers.

Construction executives.

Insurance companies.

Politicians.

Every page included payments.

Dates.

Amounts.

Photographs.

Some names were crossed out.

Others circled in red.

Marcus slowly flipped another page.

His face turned white.

"Oh my God..."

Emma looked over his shoulder.

Near the center...

One name had been highlighted.

Captain William Hayes.

Noah's current fire chief.

"No..."

Noah whispered.

"He saved my life."

Marcus shook his head.

"Or made sure you survived."

The final page contained something even stranger.

A photograph.

Old.

Faded.

Taken nearly thirty years earlier.

Seven men stood together in front of an unfinished government building.

Richard Carter was one of them.

Six others surrounded him.

Every face had been crossed out with black marker.

Except one.

The man standing in the center.

His face remained untouched.

On the back of the photograph...

Someone had written four words.

He never got caught.

Emma slowly looked at Noah.

"Who's that?"

Noah couldn't answer.

Marcus could.

His voice barely escaped.

"I've seen him before."

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus swallowed hard.

"He attended Richard's trial."

Silence.

"He was sitting behind us."

Emma felt her heart stop.

"He watched us?"

Marcus nodded.

"He never blinked."

That night...

Federal agents surrounded the Carter home.

The notebook disappeared into evidence.

The safe was removed.

The family was placed under protection.

Everyone believed they were finally secure.

But at 2:17 a.m...

Exactly one year after Emma had been rescued from the elevator...

A black sedan slowly parked across the street.

The driver never stepped outside.

He simply watched the house.

Then he smiled.

Inside the car...

A phone vibrated.

One message appeared.

The package has been opened.

A reply arrived only seconds later.

May you like

Good.

Phase Two begins now...
