CHAPTER 19 — THE ROOM BENEATH THE CITY

Red emergency lights pulsed through the underground chamber.

Every exit remained sealed.

The heavy steel elevator doors refused to move.

Marcus slammed the emergency release.

Nothing.

Olivia tried overriding the control panel.

The screen flashed only one message.

ACCESS DENIED

Emma's breathing grew faster.

"They have Daniel..."

Noah grabbed both of her hands.

His voice was calm, even though his heart was racing.

"We're getting him back."

"I promise."

This time...

He wasn't making a promise he intended to break.

The monitors flickered again.

The man in the gray coat reappeared.

He looked directly into the camera.

"Noah..."

"You've spent your life running into burning buildings."

He smiled faintly.

"But every rescue begins with understanding the fire."

The screens went dark.

Then the room shook.

A low mechanical rumble echoed beneath their feet.

One entire wall slowly slid open.

Behind it...

Another room.

Hidden for decades.

It looked nothing like the abandoned bunker.

The hidden room was spotless.

Bright white lights.

Glass walls.

Modern computers.

Dozens of servers still humming quietly.

As if someone had left only moments ago.

Lucas looked around in amazement.

"This place is still running."

Olivia walked toward one of the computer terminals.

"It's connected..."

Marcus frowned.

"Connected to what?"

Olivia's expression changed.

"Everything."

She quickly opened several windows.

Police databases.

Hospital systems.

Emergency dispatch.

Traffic cameras.

Airport surveillance.

Fire department communications.

Every system responded instantly.

Marcus whispered,

"This place isn't spying on one family."

Olivia slowly nodded.

"It can see an entire city."

Noah noticed something hanging on the far wall.

A large framed photograph.

Hundreds of firefighters stood together.

Different years.

Different departments.

Different states.

Some retired.

Some dead.

Some still active.

Each face had a small colored mark.

Green.

Yellow.

Red.

Emma stepped closer.

"What do the colors mean?"

Olivia checked another computer.

Her voice became almost inaudible.

"They're ratings."

Marcus stared.

"Ratings?"

Olivia swallowed.

"They evaluated firefighters the way companies evaluate products."

She opened another file.

LOYAL

INFLUENCEABLE

RECRUITABLE

ELIMINATE

Noah found his own name.

Beside it...

The status had changed.

Once it read:

RECRUITABLE

Now...

It displayed only one word.

UNRECOVERABLE

Lucas wandered toward an old projector.

A film reel was already loaded.

Curious, he pressed the button.

The projector came to life.

Grainy footage filled a nearby wall.

A much younger Richard Carter appeared.

He couldn't have been older than thirty.

He stood beside the Gray Man.

Richard looked nervous.

The Gray Man looked exactly the same.

Not one wrinkle different.

The recording began.

Richard asked,

"What happens if one of them refuses?"

The Gray Man answered calmly.

"Then they become an example."

Richard hesitated.

"And if I refuse?"

The Gray Man smiled.

"You already did."

The recording ended abruptly.

Emma whispered,

"He threatened Richard..."

Noah shook his head.

"No."

"He owned him."

Suddenly...

One of the computers beeped.

Olivia rushed over.

A live GPS signal had just appeared.

Not Daniel.

Someone else.

Richard Carter.

Marcus frowned.

"That's impossible."

"He died."

Olivia stared at the blinking dot.

"So why is his tracking chip still moving?"

Silence filled the room.

Noah looked up.

"Tracking chip?"

Olivia nodded reluctantly.

"Every federal high-risk prisoner receives one."

Emma's eyes widened.

"If it's moving..."

Marcus finished the sentence.

"...then either Richard is alive..."

"...or someone wants us to believe he is."

At that exact moment...

A hidden speaker crackled.

A young woman's terrified voice echoed through the room.

"Please..."

"Can anyone hear me?"

Emma froze.

"I know that voice."

The recording continued.

"My name is Lily Brooks."

Olivia's face turned pale.

Marcus looked at her.

"Who's Lily?"

Olivia whispered,

"The first firefighter's daughter who disappeared."

"Twelve years ago."

Everyone stared.

"She was never found."

The voice continued.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...don't trust the elevators."

The transmission ended.

Noah suddenly remembered something.

"The elevator."

Marcus frowned.

"What about it?"

"No building needs an elevator that reaches B7."

Olivia immediately pulled up the original construction plans.

She searched every blueprint.

Every permit.

Every engineering report.

Nothing.

B7 didn't exist.

Officially.

Emma whispered,

"So who built it?"

No one answered.

Because the answer was becoming terrifyingly obvious.

Someone...

Had built an entire underground facility beneath one of the city's largest office towers...

Without ever appearing in government records.

Suddenly...

The servers around them shut down.

One by one.

The lights dimmed.

A slow clap echoed through the darkness.

Everyone turned.

A single figure stood in the doorway.

Gray coat.

Black gloves.

Silver hair.

Exactly like the photographs.

Exactly like Lucas's drawings.

Exactly like the videos.

For the first time...

He wasn't on a screen.

He was standing only twenty feet away.

Noah stepped forward.

"You."

The man smiled politely.

"I've been called many things."

Marcus raised his weapon.

"Don't move!"

The stranger looked almost amused.

"You've imagined this meeting for a long time."

Emma shouted,

"Where is my son?"

The man looked at her with unexpected softness.

"Safe."

Noah took another step.

"If you hurt him—"

"I haven't."

The stranger interrupted calmly.

"And I won't."

Emma stared.

"What do you want?"

The Gray Man looked directly at Noah.

"I came for you."

Marcus pulled the trigger.

The gun clicked.

No bullet fired.

He checked the magazine.

Full.

He tried again.

Click.

Every agent raised their weapons.

None of them worked.

The Gray Man smiled.

"I don't enjoy violence."

He reached into his pocket.

Not for a gun.

Not for a knife.

Only a small silver key.

The same design as the key hidden in Richard Carter's safe.

He gently placed it on a nearby table.

"You've spent a year asking the wrong questions."

Noah narrowed his eyes.

"Then ask me the right one."

The stranger turned toward the exit.

Before disappearing into the darkness, he spoke one final sentence.

"The greatest lie Richard ever told..."

"...was that I was in charge."

He vanished.

Silence swallowed the room.

Noah slowly looked down at the silver key.

Engraved on it were three words that made every person in the room stop breathing.

LEVEL B8 ACCESS

There was another level.

Deeper than B7.

And if B7 had hidden decades of secrets...

May you like

What was waiting...
