CHAPTER 16 — THE GHOST IN THE FIREHOUSE

The sketchbook lay open on the kitchen table.
Every drawing showed the same man.
The same gray coat.
The same expressionless smile.
The same eyes.
Watching.
Always watching.
Noah flipped through every page.
Dozens of dates.
Different locations.
Different seasons.
Lucas had unknowingly documented a stalker for more than two years.
Agent Olivia Grant looked at the dates in disbelief.
"These aren't random."
Marcus frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Olivia pointed to several pages.
"Every time your family experienced something important..."
She circled the drawings.
"Emma's first prenatal appointment."
"Richard's charity dinner."
"Sophie's surgery."
"The Harbor Financial Center fire."
"He was there."
Emma whispered,
"So he wasn't following Richard..."
Olivia slowly nodded.
"He was following us."
The countdown continued.
24:00:00
Exactly one day remained.
The FBI moved the Carter family to a secure government safe house outside the city.
Its location was classified.
Only twelve people knew the address.
No phones.
No internet.
No visitors.
No exceptions.
For the first time in days, Emma allowed herself to believe they might actually be safe.
She was wrong.
At 3:17 a.m., Daniel began crying.
Emma picked him up.
As she rocked him back to sleep, she noticed something strange.
The nursery window was slightly open.
She was certain she had locked it.
Cold air drifted into the room.
On the windowsill sat a tiny red toy fire truck.
It hadn't been there before.
Emma froze.
Daniel stopped crying.
Attached to the toy was a folded note.
Safe houses only work...
...if no one builds them for us.
Emma screamed.
Within seconds, agents flooded the room.
Every window.
Every door.
Every inch of the property.
Nothing.
No footprints outside.
No fingerprints inside.
The toy was factory-new.
Purchased with cash.
Impossible to trace.
Olivia stared at the note.
Her face grew pale.
"The address was compromised before we arrived."
Marcus looked around in disbelief.
"How?"
Only twelve people had known.
Someone among them had betrayed them.
Noah refused to wait any longer.
"I'm going back."
Olivia looked at him.
"Back where?"
"The firehouse."
Marcus frowned.
"Why?"
Noah remembered something Richard had once said.
"I spent thirty years building connections."
The fire department.
The first place Richard had mentioned.
If the organization still existed...
Someone inside the department had to be helping it survive.
Captain William Hayes welcomed Noah with a smile.
"It's good to have you back."
The firehouse looked exactly as Noah remembered.
The smell of coffee.
The polished trucks.
The laughter in the kitchen.
Everything felt normal.
Too normal.
Noah noticed something missing.
A framed photograph of the department's twenty-fifth anniversary.
It had always hung near the entrance.
Now it was gone.
"Captain..."
"What happened to the old photo?"
Hayes hesitated.
"It was damaged."
"When?"
"A few weeks ago."
Noah nodded.
But something didn't feel right.
While Hayes was distracted by a phone call, Noah quietly entered the records room.
He searched through old department archives.
Training records.
Personnel files.
Retirement photos.
Then...
He found it.
The missing anniversary photograph.
Hidden inside a storage cabinet.
Someone hadn't thrown it away.
Someone had hidden it.
Noah spread it across the desk.
Thirty firefighters smiled proudly at the camera.
Then he noticed one face.
Standing beside Richard Carter.
The same man from the old photograph.
The gray coat.
The expressionless smile.
Except...
He wasn't wearing a coat.
He was wearing a firefighter's uniform.
Noah's heart nearly stopped.
A name was stitched onto the uniform.
M. REED
Noah rushed to the personnel database.
He typed the name.
MICHAEL REED
No records found.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Marcus arrived moments later.
"No luck?"
Noah pointed at the photograph.
"He worked here."
Marcus stared.
"But there's no file."
Exactly.
Someone had erased him.
Completely.
Back at FBI headquarters, Olivia searched older paper archives.
Finally...
One dusty folder appeared.
It wasn't under Michael Reed.
It was filed under a different name.
Martin Reed.
The folder contained only five pages.
No birth certificate.
No emergency contact.
No fingerprints.
Only one note.
Employment terminated.
Reason:
DECEASED DURING THE RIVER STREET WAREHOUSE FIRE.
Date:
Twenty-eight years ago.
Marcus looked confused.
"If he died..."
Olivia slowly placed Lucas's sketch beside the file.
"...then who's been following your family?"
That evening, the countdown reached...
12:00:00
Half a day remained.
Every agent in the operation was exhausted.
Coffee cups covered every desk.
Then alarms suddenly sounded.
Not from the safe house.
From the FBI evidence vault.
Someone had broken in.
Olivia raced downstairs.
The vault door was still locked.
No signs of forced entry.
Yet one item was missing.
Richard Carter's notebook.
The most important evidence in the investigation...
Had vanished.
Security footage showed only one person entering the vault.
Agent Olivia Grant.
Marcus looked at her in shock.
"You stole it?"
Olivia's face turned white.
"I've never been down there."
The timestamp proved otherwise.
The cameras clearly showed Olivia opening the vault, removing the notebook, and walking away.
But she had been in a meeting with twenty witnesses at the exact same time.
Noah whispered,
"Someone made the cameras lie."
Hours later, Olivia sat alone in her office.
She replayed the footage again and again.
Something caught her attention.
The woman on the screen looked exactly like her...
Except for one tiny detail.
The watch.
Olivia always wore her watch on her left wrist.
The woman in the video wore it on her right.
Someone hadn't impersonated her.
Someone had created a perfect copy.
Meanwhile...
Hundreds of miles away...
Inside an abandoned church...
A man wearing gray gloves placed Richard's stolen notebook onto a wooden table.
Another man stepped out of the shadows.
His face remained hidden.
"You have it?"
The first man nodded.
"Yes."
The hidden figure opened the notebook.
He smiled.
Then quietly tore every page from its binding.
He dropped the pages into a fireplace.
One by one...
They turned to ash.
The first man looked surprised.
"We spent years searching for that."
The hidden man watched the flames.
"I already memorized it."
He turned toward the darkness.
"And now..."
"No one else ever will."
As the last page disappeared into the fire...
A phone on the table lit up.
The countdown reached...
06:00:00
The hidden man smiled.
"Wake everyone."
May you like
He slowly closed his black leather gloves.
"It's finally time."
