Chapter 12 - The Unraveling Web

With Richard neutralized and the Moretti syndicate’s primary inside asset eliminated, the delicate balance of power in the city shifted violently overnight. The attempted sabotage at pier four had sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld, establishing without a doubt that the Rossi family was not declining, as rival factions had secretly hoped, but was sharper, deadlier, and more vigilant than ever.

Yet, for Tessa, life was forced to maintain an absurd illusion of normalcy. Two days after the events in the catacombs, she found herself standing once again behind the POS station at Ilvento, wearing her crisp white button-down shirt and black slacks, punching in drink orders for impatient diners. To the outside world, she was just an exhausted college-educated girl paying off her mother's medical bills one minimum-wage shift at a time. Only the heavy, certified cashier's check safely tucked away in her apartment drawer reminded her that her old life was permanently gone.

Gabriel came in on Thursday at eight o'clock sharp, exactly as he had for the past three years. He walked straight to booth four, his back to the wall, his dark eyes scanning the room with calm authority. But when Tessa walked over to his table with a pitcher of sparkling water, his demeanor shifted subtly, a quiet, knowing warmth touching his eyes.

"You're playing a dangerous game, keeping this job," Gabriel murmured quietly as she poured water into his glass, his voice masked by the ambient chatter of the surrounding tables. "The Moretti family knows someone leaked their operation. They're hunting for ghosts."

"Let them look," Tessa replied evenly, setting the pitcher down with a soft click. "A restaurant is the best place to hide in plain sight. Nobody suspects the waitress of running counter-intelligence."

Gabriel let out a low, genuine laugh—a rare sound that made his harsh features soften completely. He pulled a small, heavy velvet box from his coat pocket and slid it discreetly across the polished mahogany table, right beside his water glass.

"What is this?" Tessa asked, her eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"Open it," Gabriel said simply.

Tessa hesitated, then reached out and flipped open the lid. Inside rested a delicate, antique silver pocket watch, its casing engraved with intricate floral patterns from the turn of the century. Running along the outer rim was a tiny, hand-carved inscription in the exact Sicilian dialect she and Salvatore shared: To those who speak the language of truth.

"My grandfather brought this over from Palermo when he had nothing," Gabriel said softly, holding her gaze. "He said it should only be given to someone who understands the true value of survival. It belongs to you now, Tessa."

Before Tessa could formulate a reply, the heavy oak doors of the restaurant swung open with a violent crash. The ambient noise in the dining room instantly died away. A chill swept through the air as three unfamiliar men in expensive, ill-fitting suits strode into the foyer, their eyes darting aggressively around the room. They weren't regular diners. Their hands hovered dangerously close to their waistbands.

Gabriel’s expression hardened instantly into pure ice. He stood up from his booth, resting his hand casually inside his jacket, ready for blood.
