Chapter 15 - The High-Stakes Gambit

The Grand Phoenix Club was tucked away behind an unmarked steel door in the basement of a decaying Victorian brownstone on the edge of the financial district. It was a playground for corrupt politicians, laundering bankers, and high-ranking members of the Moretti syndicate. Getting inside required an invitation stamped with a gold-leaf seal and a bank account boasting at least six figures in liquid assets.
Fortunately, Gabriel’s financial backing provided both.
At eleven o'clock on a rainy Friday night, Tessa stepped out of a sleek black town car and walked up the stone steps of the brownstone. She was no longer wearing her plain white waitress uniform. Instead, she wore a stunning, backless emerald-green silk evening gown that clung perfectly to her figure, her brown hair cascading down her shoulders in soft, polished waves. The severe bun was gone, replaced by an aura of effortless elegance and dangerous confidence.
Two massive security guards in custom-tailored tuxedos stepped forward to block the entrance. "Invitation?" the larger one demanded, his hand resting near his holster.
Tessa didn't flinch. She reached into her small velvet clutch, pulled out a heavy gold-embossed card stamped with the Rossi family crest, and handed it over without a word.
The guard examined the card under the amber porch light, his eyes widening slightly as he recognized the seal. He stepped aside immediately, pulling the heavy steel door open with a respectful nod. "Apologies, signora. Welcome to the Phoenix."
Step by step, Tessa walked down the dimly lit marble staircase into the sprawling underground casino. The air was thick with the scent of expensive cigars, heavy perfume, and raw, nervous adrenaline. Around the green felt tables, men in expensive suits threw down stacks of hundred-dollar chips, their faces slick with sweat and greed.
Tessa glided through the crowd with the practiced grace of a ghost, her eyes scanning every corner of the room. Hidden behind a set of heavy velvet curtains at the far end of the hall was the private high-stakes back room—the vault where Don Donato Moretti kept his primary ledger and cash reserves.
She needed to access the central terminal on the manager's desk inside that vault to upload a decryption worm Gabriel's tech team had provided on a micro-drive disguised as a diamond earring.

As she approached the velvet curtain, a sharp voice called out from behind her. "Well, well. I don't recall seeing a face this beautiful at our tables before."
Tessa turned slowly to find a middle-aged man with slicked-back gray hair and a predatory smirk stepping out from the crowd. It was Marco Moretti, Donato's ruthless younger brother and the primary enforcer of the syndicate's financial operations.
