Chapter 14 - The Gathering Storm

Within minutes, the restaurant was cleared of the intruders, the broken glass swept away, and the terrified patrons placated with complimentary bottles of the house's most expensive vintage wine. But the illusion of safety had been permanently shattered. Ilvento was no longer just a high-end dining establishment; it was an active theater of war between two rival syndicates.
After closing hours, Tessa sat across from Gabriel in the dimly lit back office of the restaurant. The heavy oak door was locked tight. On the mahogany desk between them lay a dossier containing intercepted communications, bank records, and wiretaps detailing Don Donato Moretti’s entire operational network across the city.
"They're getting desperate," Gabriel said, rubbing his temples with exhaustion etched into every line of his face. "Sending hitmen into a public restaurant means Donato knows his time is running out. He's losing money, he's losing territory, and he's losing his mind."
"Which means he's going to make a reckless move," Tessa noted, her voice steady and analytical as she flipped through the pages of the dossier. She had come a long way from the terrified waitress trembling behind the POS station. Her mind now operated with the cold, strategic precision of a criminal mastermind's tactician. "If we wait for him to strike again, we're playing defense. And in this war, defense only buys you time until your luck runs out."
Gabriel looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a mixture of profound admiration and lingering concern. "What are you suggesting, Tessa? You want to take the fight to Donato's doorstep?"
"Not directly," Tessa said, leaning forward and pointing a slender finger at a specific financial routing document in the dossier. "Donato is funding his entire operation through a string of underground high-stakes poker clubs operating out of the financial district. Cut off his money, and his army dissolves overnight. The enforcers won't fight for a boss who can't pay their weekly retainers."

Gabriel stared at her in stunned silence for a moment, then a slow, dangerous smile crept across his lips. "An economic strike. Hit them where it hurts most—their wallets."
"Exactly," Tessa said. "And I know how to get inside."
