Chapter 27 - Healing Wounds

With Corrado Vance shipped back to Sicily in a cargo container reserved for livestock, the final embers of the old-world mafia feuds were permanently extinguished. The city entered a period of unprecedented peace and legitimacy. The Rossi family's real estate investments, shipping terminals, and upscale restaurants flourished under clean audits and transparent governance.

Yet, despite the vast wealth and power they commanded, Tessa and Gabriel chose a surprisingly quiet life. They moved out of the imposing stone fortress of the main Rossi estate into a sunlit, modern penthouse overlooking the harbor, where the crashing waves could be heard softly echoing through the windows every morning.

Don Salvatore Rossi, now well into his twilight years, spent his final seasons residing comfortably in a peaceful coastal villa in southern Italy, frequently writing handwritten letters to Tessa filled with Sicilian recipes, old stories, and words of profound respect—letters Tessa always answered in kind, maintaining a deep, unspoken bond that spanned across oceans and generations.

One warm Sunday afternoon, Tessa sat on the expansive balcony of their penthouse, sipping black coffee and reviewing architectural plans for a new chain of legitimate gourmet restaurants she was launching independently. Her plain white waitress uniform was long gone, replaced by a comfortable silk blouse, but the severe bun was completely replaced by loose, flowing brown hair catching the gentle harbor breeze.

Gabriel stepped out onto the balcony, carrying two steaming cups of espresso. He walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin gently on her shoulder, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume.

"You're working too hard, La Regina," Gabriel murmured softly against her ear, a warm smile touching his lips. "The restaurants can wait. It's Sunday."

Tessa leaned back against his chest, placing her coffee cup on the glass table and resting her hands over his. "I'm not working, Gabriel. I'm building. There's a big difference."

"I know," Gabriel whispered, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. He looked down into her eyes, the dark shadows of paranoia and violence completely gone from his expression, replaced by a deep, unwavering peace. "You built an empire out of ashes and coffee cups. Sometimes I still can't believe you walked into Ilvento three years ago."

"Neither can I," Tessa smiled, wrapping her arms around his neck. "If someone had told me back then that I'd end up running a syndicate and marrying its heir, I would have laughed in their face."

"And yet, here we are," Gabriel murmured. He leaned in, capturing her lips in a soft, lingering kiss that tasted of espresso, warmth, and a future that belonged entirely to them.
