Chapter 9 - Blood on the Docks

Midnight at Pier Four was a symphony of cold wind, crashing black waves, and the rhythmic creaking of massive container cranes. Thick fog rolled in from the harbor, swallowing the towering stacks of shipping containers and turning the sprawling concrete expanse into a labyrinth of deep shadows and haunting echoes.
Tessa sat huddled in the passenger seat of Gabriel’s matte-black sedan, parked inside the shadows of a massive metal warehouse. She wore a heavy black tactical jacket borrowed from Marcus, far too large for her slender frame, but it kept out the biting ocean chill. Through the rain-streaked windshield, she watched a convoy of three heavy-duty semi-trucks idle near berth forty-two, their headlights cutting harsh cones through the heavy fog.
"You shouldn't be here," Gabriel muttered from the driver's seat, his eyes fixed on the distant trucks through a pair of high-powered night-vision binoculars. His jaw was clenched so tightly a muscle ticked rhythmically in his cheek. "This isn't a game, Tessa. If things go sideways, there are no rules out here."
"I gave you the coordinates," Tessa replied coldly, refusing to cower. "And I translated the traitor's message. I earned my place in the car, Gabriel. Don't treat me like a liability now."
Before Gabriel could retort, the radio crackling on the dashboard hissed to life. Marcus’s deep voice echoed through the static. "Boss. We got movement. A black van just bypassed the outer security gate using an override code. Only three people in this city have that code."
Gabriel’s eyes darkened into a terrifying, glacial void. "Lock down the perimeter. Let them get close. I want to see who’s signing their own death warrant."
Tessa watched through the windshield as a sleek, unmarked black van crept silently out of the fog, stopping fifty yards away from the front semi-truck of the convoy. The side door slid open with a soft metallic scrape, and three figures stepped out into the mist, dressed head-to-toe in dark tactical gear, carrying suppressed automatic rifles. They moved with professional, military-grade precision.
They weren't common street thugs. They were high-level mercenaries.
The lead figure raised his weapon, stepping toward the cargo doors of the truck, preparing to plant an explosive charge. But before his finger could touch the trigger, the entire pier erupted into sudden, blinding chaos.
From every shadow behind the towering shipping containers, heavy halogen floodlights slammed on simultaneously, turning the dark docks into the glaring brightness of a sports stadium. At the same moment, a dozen armed enforcers stepped out from the fog, their weapons leveled squarely at the three mercenaries.
"Drop the weapons!" Marcus’s voice boomed through a megaphone, echoing off the concrete walls with terrifying authority.

The mercenaries froze like deer caught in headlights. But the lead operative didn't drop his gun. Instead, he spun around with lightning speed, aiming straight toward the shadows where Gabriel's sedan was parked.
"Get down!" Gabriel shouted, lunging across the console and shoving Tessa onto the floorboards just as a hail of bullets shattered the windshield, raining razor-sharp shards of glass across the back seats.
