Chapter 25 - The Ghost of Palermo

Midnight at the northern harbor was freezing. Thick sea fog rolled in off the black water, wrapping the abandoned warehouse in a suffocating shroud of gray mist.

Tessa walked alone up the crumbling concrete steps of the warehouse entrance. She wore a heavy black wool coat, her hair tied back into its familiar, severe bun—a deliberate tactical choice to remind herself of where she came from. She carried no weapons, only a small leather briefcase containing encrypted decoy files designed to look like the syndicate's master ledgers.

She pushed open the heavy rusted iron door. The interior was a cavernous, dark expanse illuminated only by a single overhead halogen lamp swinging gently in the drafty wind, casting eerie, dancing shadows across stacked wooden crates.

"Well, well, well," a raspy, aged voice echoed from the darkness.

Out of the shadows stepped an old man leaning heavily on an ebony cane. He wore a dated, immaculate three-piece suit that smelled faintly of stale tobacco and old money. It was Don Salvatore’s former rival from Palermo—a relic of the old country named Corrado Vance, who had spent decades hiding in the shadows of American exile.

"The famous waitress," Corrado sneered, his dark eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction as he circled her slowly like a vulture. "I must admit, I was curious about the woman who bewitched Gabriel Rossi and managed to charm a dying Don. But looking at you now... you're just a peasant girl playing dress-up in a world of wolves."

Tessa didn't flinch. She stood perfectly straight, holding the briefcase tightly in her hand, letting her breathing remain slow and steady. "And you're a ghost hiding in a basement, Corrado. Your war ended twenty years ago. You just haven't figured out how to die yet."

Corrado’s face twisted in sudden, violent rage. He raised his cane, pointing it aggressively at her chest. "You think you're safe behind Rossi's guns? You think because you balanced a few ledgers you belong at the head of the table? I'm going to send your head back to Gabriel in this very briefcase!"

He snapped his fingers, and four armed thugs stepped out from behind the towering wooden crates, raising their suppressed pistols directly toward Tessa.

Tessa didn't scream. She didn't cower. She simply looked at her wristwatch, the glowing digital numbers reading exactly twelve-fourteen.

Fourteen minutes past midnight.

"You're right about one thing, Corrado," Tessa said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the cavernous warehouse. "I'm not a wolf."

She smiled coldly. "I'm the exterminator."
