Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Syndicate

The manila folder sat between them like an unexploded bomb. Tessa stared at it, her instincts screaming at her to open the door, step out onto the pavement, and run as fast as she could. Getting involved with the Rossi family was like walking into a burning building to fetch a dropped coin. But as she looked at Gabriel's tired, drawn face—a face carrying the invisible burden of an empire built on blood and concrete—she realized the door was already locked.
"Why are you telling me this?" Tessa asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "I pour coffee and carry plates of overpriced steak. I am a ghost. You said it yourself."
"A ghost is exactly what I need," Gabriel replied, picking up the folder and sliding it closer to her lap. "Someone who can walk through the dining rooms, the back offices, and the high-stakes private rooms of this city without anyone looking twice. Someone who understands the old ways, the old blood, and the unspoken rules that keep men like my father alive."
Tessa slowly opened the folder. Inside were glossy photographs, financial transaction logs, and grainy surveillance stills. Pictures of upscale restaurants, shipping ports, and dimly lit warehouses flashed before her eyes. Marked with heavy red ink were names, dates, and bank account numbers routed through offshore shell companies.
"Someone within our inner circle is leaking logistics data to the Moretti family," Gabriel explained, his voice hardening with cold fury. "For the past six months, our cargo shipments have been intercepted, our real estate bids undermined, and last week, someone tried to tamper with my father's medication. The local police are either bought or too terrified to investigate. If we look externally, we trigger an all-out gang war that will leave half the city in ruins. I need someone on the inside. Someone invisible."
Tessa looked up from the photographs, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "You want me to spy? For you? Are you out of your mind? I don't know the first thing about corporate espionage or mafia politics. I know how to balance a tray and deal with drunk Wall Street brokers!"
"You stood in front of Don Salvatore Rossi—a man who has executed traitors with his bare hands—and scolded him in a dialect he hasn't heard since he was a boy in Sicily," Gabriel countered sharply, leaning in closer until she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "You didn't blink. You didn't shake. You have an iron stomach, Tessa, and a mind that notices details others ignore. That is more valuable than a dozen armed soldiers."
"And what happens when they find out?" Tessa hissed, her anger finally breaking through her fear. "What happens when your enemies figure out that the quiet waitress is poking around where she doesn't belong? Do you think a check will bring me back to life?"
Gabriel went silent. He reached out, his warm fingers brushing against her knuckles as he closed the folder. The simple touch sent a sudden, electric shiver up her spine. "I won't let anything happen to you. I give you my word. And unlike the men who come into that restaurant, I don't break my word."
Tessa stared down at his hand resting on hers. She thought of her cramped apartment, the endless stack of bills, and the suffocating cycle of poverty that had trapped her mother until her dying day. Gabriel was offering her a way out—not just a temporary escape, but a chance to seize control of her own destiny, wrapped in the terrifying embrace of the underworld.

"If I do this," Tessa whispered, her voice trembling slightly with the weight of the choice, "the debt is wiped clean. Completely. And when it's over, I walk away. No ties. No strings."
Gabriel’s lips curved into a faint, grim smile. "Deal."
