Chapter 24 - The Secret Alliance in Boston

Back in Boston, Noah and Chloe sat in a quiet corner of the university’s rare books library, surrounded by towering mahogany shelves and the comforting scent of old paper. Chloe slid a thick manila envelope across the polished wooden table. Noah carefully untied the yellow cotton string and pulled out a series of printed bank statements and corporate email printouts.
“My mother kept a duplicate ledger of every bribe Arthur paid out to the board members,” Chloe explained, her voice trembling slightly as she clutched a paper cup of black coffee between her hands. “When the federal marshals raided our house last year, they missed this because it was hidden inside the lining of an antique travel trunk in the attic. I only found it when I went back to pack my remaining clothes for the semester.”
Noah scanned the pages, his analytical mind processing the intricate web of financial transactions with astonishing speed. The names on the bribe list weren't just low-level corporate managers; they included the sitting Vice President of Sinclair Holdings, Robert Sterling—a man who had publicly wept at his grandfather’s funeral and praised the family’s legacy while secretly plotting its demise.
“Robert Sterling,” Noah murmured, tracing a finger across a wire transfer receipt dated just three weeks prior. “He’s still sitting on the board in Denver. He’s the one managing the upcoming commercial real estate restructuring project that my grandmother and great-uncle Marcus are currently auditing.”

Chloe looked down, blinking back tears of humiliation and regret. “My father always said that loyalty was just a commodity to be bought and sold, Noah. I spent my whole life believing that wealth and power were the only things that mattered. But watching my family tear itself apart... watching what my father did to your grandmother... it made me sick. I don't want to be part of that legacy anymore.”
Noah looked at Chloe, seeing the genuine remorse and pain in her eyes. Despite everything their families had been through, he realized she was just another victim of the toxic greed that had poisoned their parents' generation. He reached across the table and placed his hand gently over hers. “You aren't your father, Chloe,” Noah said softly. “And together, we are going to make sure Robert Sterling pays for what he did.”
