Chapter 44 - The London Trap

The elegant office suites overlooking Hyde Park in London were the epitome of refined corporate wealth. Evelyn Cross sat behind a massive mahogany desk, reviewing quarterly earnings reports with an air of untouchable superiority. At fifty-five, she had spent her entire career manipulating corporate charters, exploiting legal gray areas, and orchestrating hostile takeovers for wealthy clients who lacked moral compasses.
Her intercom chimed softly. Evelyn pressed the button without looking up. "Yes, Janet? I told you I am not to be disturbed."
"I'm sorry, Ms. Cross," her assistant replied, her voice trembling slightly through the speaker. "There's a courier downstairs. He insisted this be delivered directly to your hands. It bears the official seal of the international arbitration tribunal and an emergency injunction from the U.S. Federal District Court."
Evelyn frowned, a flicker of irritation crossing her features. "Bring it up immediately."
Two minutes later, the heavy oak doors of her private office swung open, and Evelyn briskly signed for a thick, dark blue legal binder. She ripped the gold- embossed seal open and scanned the first page. As her eyes raced across the paragraphs, the color drained completely from her sophisticated, perfectly made-up face.
The document wasn't a standard civil suit. It was a binding arbitration summons tied directly to the Meridian Holdings index—the exact dormant subsidiary she believed she had successfully buried offshore. Furthermore, attached to the back of the binder was a certified federal subpoena issued by a U.S. magistrate, requiring her personal appearance in a Denver courtroom within seventy-two hours to testify under oath regarding her role in the Sinclair corporate restructuring.

Evelyn’s hands shook uncontrollably as she dropped the papers onto her polished desk. Her carefully constructed fortress of plausible deniability had just suffered a direct, catastrophic hit. She realized with chilling certainty that if she ignored the summons, her global financial empire would be seized overnight; but if she boarded a flight to Denver, she would be walking directly into a well-laid trap from which there was no escape.
