Chapter 42 - The Midnight Summons in Denver

Back in Denver, the rain tapped a rhythmic, melancholic beat against the large bay windows of Daniel Sinclair’s historic Victorian home. It was past midnight, but the study lamp was burning brightly. Daniel sat at his oak desk, reviewing structural blueprints for a new community housing project when his cell phone buzzed violently across the polished wood.

The caller ID displayed an encrypted satellite relay from Boston. Daniel snatched the phone, swiping to answer instantly. "Noah? Is everything alright?"

"Dad, I need you to call Marcus Vance immediately," Noah’s voice came through the speaker, crisp, urgent, and laced with absolute focus. "We found a hidden node in the Meridian Holdings index. There’s a third conspirator—someone who managed the offshore capital flows while Robert and Arthur were acting as the public faces of the conspiracy."

Daniel stood up from his desk, a cold surge of adrenaline cutting through his fatigue. After everything his family had endured—from Vanessa’s betrayal to the harrowing corporate takeovers—he refused to let another threat blindside them. "Did you verify the routing numbers, son?"

"Every single one," Noah confirmed. "The trail leads straight to London. Specifically, to a former senior legal consultant named Evelyn Cross—a woman who used to advise my grandfather before he passed away. She was the one who drafted the original loophole clauses in the corporate charter."

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk, his knuckles turning white. "Evelyn Cross. She sat at our family dinner table. She smiled at my mother and pretended to be our most trusted legal advisor while quietly engineering the backdoors for the takeover."

"She thinks she’s untouchable across the Atlantic," Noah said firmly. "But Marcus has already initiated contact with international financial regulators. If we move fast, we can freeze her overseas accounts before she liquidates the remaining dormant assets."

"Hold your ground in Boston, Noah," Daniel commanded, his voice resolute. "I’m flying to Aspen at dawn to brief your grandmother, and then Marcus and I are coordinating with the federal prosecutor’s office. This game is over."
