Chapter 2 - The Ghost at the Door and the Five-Second Freeze

By nine-thirty, the front door clicked shut, followed by the muffled jingle of keys and the heavy elevator doors sliding closed in the private hallway. Sergio Vance had finally departed, leaving behind a pristine dining table littered with empty wine glasses, half-eaten artisanal cheese plates, and the lingering scent of expensive cologne.

Elena waited a full five minutes to ensure Alejandro was busy packing away the remaining bottles in the wet bar before she quietly turned the brass handle of the master bedroom and stepped out into the hallway.

Her mission was simple: clear the wreckage, clean up the kitchen, and then begin the process of dismantling Alejandro’s carefully constructed house of cards. She was done hiding. She was done apologizing for existing.

She was standing by the dining table, gathering the crystal water goblets, when the front door suddenly rattled open with frantic urgency.

“Alejandro, I am so sorry, I left my phone right on your—motion sensor credenza—” Sergio’s voice cut off abruptly mid-sentence.

The regional director stepped fully into the foyer, his eyes locking onto Elena standing under the warm chandelier light.

And then, Sergio Vance completely froze.

It was as if someone had pulled the plug on his nervous system. He stood stock-still in the center of the room, his jaw slightly slack, his eyes wide and unblinking. For five agonizing, breathless seconds, he stared at her face with an intensity that bordered on terror, as though he were looking directly at a phantom risen from the bottom of the ocean.

“Tor... Torres?!” Sergio finally breathed out, the name tearing from his chest in a rasp of absolute, unadulterated shock.

From the kitchen, the sound of breaking glass shattered the heavy silence. A heavy wine glass slipped from Alejandro’s fingers, smashing into a thousand jagged pieces against the tile floor.

Alejandro rushed out from the kitchen doorway, panic instantly contorting his face into a mask of frantic, sweating terror. He slid to a halt beside his boss, his hands trembling as he forced a twitchy, manic smile.

“Wait... Sergio! What—what are you doing back? And... why are you looking at my wife like that? You two... you two know each other?!” Alejandro stammered, his voice climbing an octave in pure, unadulterated panic.

Sergio ignored his employee entirely. He didn't even glance down at Alejandro. Instead, the regional director took a slow, deliberate, almost reverent step forward toward the dining table, never breaking eye contact with Elena. The color had completely drained from Sergio’s face, replaced by a sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion.

“It is you,” Sergio whispered, his voice trembling as he raised a hand to his chest. “My God... Dr. Elena Torres.”

Alejandro staggered backward as if he had been struck by a physical blow. His face went chalk-white. “D-Dr. Torres? What are you talking about, Sergio? Her name is Elena Reynolds! She’s just a... a housewife! She’s unstable!”

Sergio finally turned his head slowly, fixing Alejandro with a look of such absolute, freezing contempt that the younger man physically shrank back against the wall.

“Unstable?” Sergio’s voice dropped into a dangerous, glacial register that rattled the windows. “You miserable, lying parasite. Do you have any idea whose home you are standing in right now? Do you have any idea who the woman you locked in a bedroom truly is?”

Alejandro’s lips moved silently, but no sound came out. The trap was springing shut, and the teeth were made of steel.
