Chapter 39 - The Global Health Summit in Washington

By early summer, Elena’s responsibilities as Global President of the International Federation of Surgeons called her to Washington, D.C., for the annual World Health Leadership Summit.
The sprawling convention center was packed with heads of state, international health ministers, and pioneering researchers from every continent. Elena was scheduled to deliver the keynote address on the future of pediatric healthcare infrastructure and humanitarian surgical access.
Backstage in the VIP holding room, adjusting her sharp ivory blazer, Elena felt a calm, electrifying hum of anticipation.
The doors opened, and Sergio walked in, carrying a small black velvet box alongside a cup of black coffee. He looked immaculate in a tailored midnight-blue suit.
“Ready to conquer the nation's capital, Dr. Vance?” Sergio asked warmly, handing her the coffee.
“Always,” Elena smiled, taking a sip. “Though I have to admit, after Geneva and London, Washington feels almost like a walk in the park.”
“Don't underestimate D.C. bureaucrats,” Sergio laughed lightly. Then, his expression softened into something deeply tender. He reached into his pocket and set the small velvet box down on the dressing table, flipping it open. Inside rested a delicate, custom-designed diamond pendant shaped like an intricate, beating heart—symbolizing her life’s work and their unbreakable bond.
“What’s this for?” Elena asked softly, her breath catching.

“It’s not for the conference, and it’s not for the medical board,” Sergio said, taking her hands in his. “It’s a reminder. A reminder that no matter how many global stages you conquer, no matter how many lives you save, your heart is safe with me, just as mine is safe with you.”
Elena’s eyes glistened with unshed tears of profound joy. She leaned forward, pressing a tender, passionate kiss to his lips. “Thank you, Sergio. For everything you are.”
