Chapter 30 - The Unexpected Letter

While Elena was accepting her global presidency in Geneva, a thick, official-looking envelope arrived at the Manhattan penthouse, addressed to Sergio Vance.
Sergio’s executive assistant had forwarded it immediately to his private study in Westchester, where Sergio sat reviewing quarterly investment portfolios late that evening. He picked up the letter opener, slicing neatly through the heavy paper.
Inside was a handwritten letter on coarse, lined prison stationery. The handwriting was frantic, jagged, and unmistakably familiar.
“Sergio,” the letter began.
Sergio’s brow furrowed in disgust as he read further.
“I know you hate me. I know you think I got what I deserved. But I am writing to you man-to-man, begging for a fraction of mercy. I have nothing left. My cell is freezing, my health is failing, and I am trapped in a nightmare. You are a powerful man—you have the connections to secure a sentence reduction, a transfer, or a pardon. Please, Sergio. Just talk to Elena. Ask her to forgive me. Ask her to drop the remaining civil judgments. I’m begging you.”
It was signed at the bottom in trembling ink: Alejandro Reynolds.
Sergio stared at the paper for a long, silent moment. A cold, bitter laugh escaped his throat. Mercy? The man who had locked his wife in a bedroom, starved her dignity, lied to executive leadership, and tried to destroy her life was now begging for mercy from the very person he had sought to ruin.

Sergio folded the letter neatly, walked over to the sleek stainless-steel fireplace, and dropped the paper directly into the dancing flames. He watched without emotion as Alejandro’s desperate plea curled, blackened, and turned to ash.
Some monsters don't deserve redemption. They only deserve the consequences of their own actions.
