Chapter 46 - The Shadow in Upstate New York

While Elena was cementing her permanent legacy in Manhattan, miles away in the cold, unforgiving environment of the upstate federal correctional facility, Alejandro Reynolds was facing the loneliest winter of his life.
His cell was damp, freezing, and smelled of industrial disinfectant and stale despair. His appeals were entirely exhausted, his legal team had long since stopped answering his letters, and his family had severed all contact years ago when his financial crimes and toxic abuse came to light.
He sat on his thin metal cot, shivering in his coarse orange jumpsuit, staring blankly at the small television screen mounted high in the corner of the common dayroom.
A national news broadcast was running a midday financial and lifestyle segment. The screen cut to a live feed from Manhattan, featuring a crisp, bright press conference at the Torres Institute.
There she was.
Elena Torres-Vance, radiantly beautiful, powerful, and commanding, standing at a podium adorned with national medical insignias, announcing the nationwide codification of her surgical protocol. The news anchor’s voice droned on, praising her global presidency, her multi-million-dollar institute, and her blissful marriage to corporate titan Sergio Vance.
Alejandro let out a hollow, strangled sob, pressing his hands hard against his face. He had possessed everything—a brilliant, devoted wife who could have given him the world, a luxurious life, and limitless potential—and he had thrown it all away out of pure, unadulterated malice, arrogance, and greed. He had tried to lock her away in a dark room to steal her condo and make himself look like a martyr, believing she was weak and disposable.
Instead, his cruelty had blown his own life to absolute smithereens, landing him in a prison cell while the woman he tried to destroy ascended to immortal legendary status.

“You lost, Reynolds. Turn the damn TV off!” a gruff voice shouted from down the tier, followed by a loud clang against the iron bars.
Alejandro slumped sideways onto the hard mattress, curling into a tight ball. He was completely invisible, utterly ruined, and trapped forever in the prison of his own making.
