Returning to Manhattan felt like coming home to an empire of light. The city was bustling with summer energy, and the Torres Institute was running at peak efficiency, setting new benchmarks in pediatric micro-vascular research and training the brightest young minds in medicine.
On a warm Thursday morning, Elena sat in her executive office on the seventh floor, reviewing international grant proposals. Her private phone chimed with a notification from her legal counsel regarding the final closure of all residual corporate files linked to Alejandro’s defunct employment history.
The last digital trace of his existence in the corporate registry was officially archived and locked away. He was a non-entity, completely erased from the high-powered world he had tried so desperately to conquer through deceit.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.
“Come in,” Elena said, looking up from her tablet.
Marcus, her chief resident, walked into the office holding a sleek silver tablet. “Dr. Vance, you have a visitor in the private consultation suite. A VIP medical delegation from Zurich who flew in specifically to observe your hybrid aortic reconstruction technique tomorrow morning.”
“Tell them I’ll meet them in the surgical briefing room in twenty minutes,” Elena instructed calmly. “And Marcus? Make sure the resident observation gallery is fully prepped. I want every junior surgeon to see the exact perfusion gradients we discussed yesterday.”
“Right away, Dr. Vance,” Marcus nodded respectfully before turning to exit.

Elena stood up, smoothing the front of her tailored charcoal skirt suit. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the breathtaking expanse of the Manhattan skyline. The sky was brilliant blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds.
