Chapter 36 - The Unexpected Visitor at the Institute

The following Tuesday afternoon, while Elena was reviewing surgical schedules in her seventh-floor office, her private intercom chimed softly.

“Dr. Vance,” her administrative assistant’s voice came through. “There’s a gentleman in the ground-floor reception lobby asking to speak with you. He insists it’s a matter of urgent professional courtesy. He introduced himself as Detective Miller from the New York County District Attorney’s office.”

Elena paused, her pen hovering over her tablet. The DA’s office? She frowned slightly, pressing the intercom button. “Did he specify what the inquiry is regarding?”

“He mentioned it pertains to the concluded federal case against your ex-husband, Alejandro Reynolds, and some final restitution paperwork that requires your signature as the primary asset holder.”

Elena let out a quiet breath. Even from behind bars, the remnants of Alejandro’s legal wreckage occasionally required formal closure. “Send him up to Conference Room A. I’ll be there in five minutes.”

When Elena walked into Conference Room A, Detective Miller—a weary-looking man in a rumpled trench coat holding a manila folder—stood up from the conference table to greet her.

“Dr. Vance, thank you for making the time,” Detective Miller said, extending a hand.

“Of course, Detective. Let’s get this paperwork settled,” Elena replied, taking a seat across from him.

The detective opened the folder, sliding a series of final asset transfer documents across the polished mahogany table. “As you know, Reynolds exhausted his final appeals last month. His remaining personal effects—stored in a municipal locker under a seizure warrant—have been officially processed. Because you were granted sole ownership of the primary properties and financial restitution, the state requires your formal sign-off to close the case file permanently.”

Elena quickly reviewed the legal forms, her eyes scanning the paragraphs with sharp, professional precision. Everything was standard. Everything was final.

“Consider it signed,” Elena said, picking up a sleek metal pen and executing her signature with clean, decisive strokes.

Detective Miller gathered the papers, slipping them back into the folder. He looked up at her with a respectful nod. “If I may say so, Dr. Vance... what you endured, and how you rebuilt your life after everything that man put you through... it’s nothing short of extraordinary. Most people would have broken.”

Elena looked back at him, her dark eyes steady and serene. “Some people break, Detective. And others use the fire to forge steel. I chose the steel.”
