Chapter 27 - The Shadow from the Past

While the Torres-Vance household basked in the warmth of success, miles away in the damp, sterile visiting room of the federal correctional facility, a broken man was hitting rock bottom.
Alejandro Reynolds stared across the scratched Plexiglas partition at his newly appointed public defender—a tired young lawyer who looked as exhausted by Alejandro’s endless complaining as the prison guards were.
“I’m telling you, there’s been a technicality!” Alejandro hissed, his voice raspy and desperate, his eyes bloodshot and sunken into his pale face. “My ex-wife, Elena—she manipulated the forensic audits! She conspired with Sergio Vance to frame me! If you file a federal injunction, we can overturn the asset forfeiture! I want my condo back! I want my life back!”
The public defender sighed heavily, rubbing his temples before looking up with a cold, unyielding stare.
“Mr. Reynolds, for the tenth and final time, there is no technicality,” the lawyer said flatly. “The financial records recovered from your personal laptop clearly documented years of corporate embezzlement, fraudulent tax filings, and hidden offshore accounts used to fund your affairs. Furthermore, your restraining order violations and stalking charges are airtight. The judge threw out your appeal yesterday morning. There is nothing more I can do for you. Serve your time, keep your head down, and accept reality.”
The lawyer stood up, gathered his files, and walked away without looking back, leaving Alejandro pounding his fist against the Plexiglas.
“No! You can’t leave! You’re supposed to help me!” Alejandro shrieked, his voice echoing off the concrete walls before a towering correctional officer grabbed him by the shoulder and shoved him back toward the cell block.

Alejandro stumbled, hitting the floor hard. Tears of pure, unadulterated rage and self-pity burned his eyes. He had possessed everything—a brilliant, successful wife who loved him, a luxury home, and a comfortable life—and he had thrown it all away because of his arrogant greed, his insecurity, and his cruel need to dominate someone far superior to him.
Now, he had nothing. And worst of all, he knew the world had completely forgotten he ever existed.
