Chapter 31 - The Westchester Sanctuary

The autumn winds swept golden leaves across the manicured lawns of the Westchester estate, but inside the sprawling stone manor, the atmosphere was cozy, warm, and filled with quiet domestic bliss.

Elena stepped through the heavy oak front doors, kicking off her designer heels with a soft sigh of relief. Her trip to Geneva had been an unprecedented triumph, but there was nothing quite like being home.

Sergio stepped out of the study, holding two glasses of vintage red wine. He took one look at her tired expression and smiled warmly, stepping forward to relieve her of her briefcase.

“Welcome home, Madame President,” Sergio teased gently, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “How was the flight?”

“Long, but exhilarating,” Elena smiled, accepting the glass of wine and taking a slow sip. “The international board ratified three new pediatric research grants, and European medical schools are officially adopting our surgical curriculum.”

“I’d expect nothing less from the finest surgeon in the world,” Sergio said, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and guiding her toward the sunken living room where a roaring fire crackled in the stone hearth.

As they settled onto the plush velvet sofa, Elena looked up at him, her dark eyes catching the warm flickering light of the fire. “Did anything noteworthy happen while I was away? Any corporate earthquakes?”

Sergio hesitated for a fraction of a second, debating whether to mention Alejandro’s pathetic letter. He decided the man wasn't even worth wasting breath on.

“Nothing important,” Sergio replied smoothly, resting his arm along the back of the sofa. “Just standard corporate acquisitions and routine board meetings. My focus was entirely on counting down the hours until you came back home.”

Elena smiled, leaning her head against his shoulder. She felt completely safe, completely cherished, and utterly invincible. The dark, terrifying days of confinement, gaslighting, and emotional abuse felt like a lifetime away—a distant bad dream experienced by someone else entirely.
