Chapter 17 - The Gathering of CaposThe subterranean conference room beneath the Moretti Holdings headquarters was built like a medieval vault—thick reinforced concrete walls, soundproofed acoustic panels, and a single heavy steel door that required both retinal and fingerprint scanners to open.

Around the long, polished obsidian table sat the five regional capos who managed Vincent’s vast empire across the American Southeast. These were not men to be trifled with; each commanded thousands of loyal soldiers, controlled lucrative smuggling routes, and held immense political leverage across Georgia, Florida, and the Carolinas. Yet, tonight, absolute silence gripped the room. Not a single man dared to speak above a whisper as they waited for the boss to arrive.
The heavy steel door swung open with a slow, echoing hiss.
Vincent Moretti stepped into the room, draped in a charcoal tailored suit, exuding an aura of terrifying, absolute authority. Every capo stood up instantly, their heads bowed in instinctive respect and fear. Vincent walked slowly to the head of the table, pulled out his high-backed leather chair, and sat down without saying a word.
He placed his hands flat on the obsidian surface, his cold gaze sweeping slowly across the faces of the five men seated before him.
“Gentlemen,” Vincent began, his voice cutting through the heavy air like a razor-sharp blade. “For twenty years, this syndicate has operated on three fundamental rules: absolute loyalty, absolute discretion, and absolute protection of the family. Anyone who violated those rules was dealt with swiftly and permanently.”
He pressed a button on his control console. The wall-mounted projection screen flickered to life, displaying a complex web of financial transactions, encrypted email headers, and surveillance photographs linking Sterling Global Logistics to an unknown external syndicate operating out of Chicago.
“Two months ago, I rooted out a traitor in our corporate ranks named Richard Sterling,” Vincent continued, his tone hardening with every syllable. “I believed he was acting alone, selling our shipping schedules for personal profit. But new intelligence recovered from international servers proves that Sterling was merely a middleman for a much larger, coordinated hostile takeover engineered by the Chicago syndicate under the leadership of a man named Salvatore Rossi.”
A nervous murmur rippled through the table. Salvatore Rossi was a ruthless, old-school Chicago mob boss known for his brutal expansion tactics and utter disregard for territorial boundaries.
“Rossi believes that because I spent the last six months fighting to save my daughter’s life, my grip on the Southeast has weakened,” Vincent said, standing up to his full height, leaning forward over the table. “He thinks he can use corporate espionage, biological subversion, and hidden dead-man switches to dismantle Moretti Holdings from the inside out.”
Dante Moretti, Vincent’s trusted cousin and head of maritime security, slammed his fist onto the table. “Give the word, Vincent. I’ll take two strike teams up to Chicago tonight and burn Rossi’s operation to the ground before he even knows what hit him.”
Vincent held up a single hand, signaling patience. The art of war in the underworld required surgical precision, not reckless aggression.

“No, Dante,” Vincent replied coldly. “We don’t go to Chicago yet. We set a trap right here in Atlanta. Rossi thinks he’s holding all the cards because of that automated dead-man transmission. We are going to let him believe his file transmission was successful. We are going to feed his intelligence network false manifests, lure his top Enforcers into our territory, and show the entire American underworld what happens when someone dares to test the Moretti family.”
The capos exchanged dark, knowing grins. The lion was awake, and he was hungry for blood.
