Chapter 6 - The Echoes of the PastThe heavy steel doors of the North Georgia shipping warehouse slammed shut with a finality that echoed like a gunshot through the damp, concrete loading bay. Inside the lower cargo container, pitch blackness enveloped Elena and Dr. Harrison Vance like a physical weight. There were no windows, no clocks, and no sounds except for the erratic, shallow breathing of the man kneeling on the corrugated metal floor.

Elena sat with her back pressed against the cold wall, her silk nightgown ruined by grime and sweat. Her fingers, which had spent years meticulously orchestrating a multi-million-dollar conspiracy, now clawed uselessly at the rough iron seams.

"This isn't how it's supposed to end," Elena whispered, her voice cracking with hysteria as she stared into the impenetrable dark. "Vincent is a businessman now. He’s civilized. He has too much to lose with the federal task forces watching his shipping lines."

"You miscalculated him, Elena," Dr. Vance muttered, his voice trembling uncontrollably. He hugged his knees to his chest, shivering from the damp chill seeping through the container walls. "I told you from the beginning that men who built empires in the underworld don't follow civilized rules when their blood is threatened. We are ghosts to him now. Nobody knows where we are."

Upstairs, sitting in his bulletproof SUV parked outside the perimeter fence, Vincent Moretti watched the live thermal feed on a ruggedized tablet. His expression was as cold and unyielding as carved granite. Marcus stood outside the passenger window, leaning down to brief his boss.

"The container is sealed and monitored 24/7, Boss," Marcus reported smoothly. "No food, no water, just darkness. Federal agents from the Organized Crime Strike Force have been sniffing around our Midtown accounts, trying to connect us to Vance’s illicit medical licenses. Shall I divert them?"

Vincent tapped his finger lightly against the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the infrared silhouettes of the two prisoners on his screen. "Let them look, Marcus. In fact, leave a clean, untraceable digital breadcrumb pointing straight to Dr. Vance's offshore shell corporations in the Caymans. Let the FBI do half our work for us. When the federal indictments drop for medical malpractice and illegal human experimentation, the courts will freeze every single asset Elena tried to steal."

"Consider it done," Marcus replied, a thin smile touching the corner of his mouth. "And the boy?"

"Set up a trust fund for him," Vincent said firmly, his mind drifting back to Lila laughing in the sunroom. "Make sure he never has to sleep under a bridge or wear duct-taped sneakers again. He saved my daughter's life. In my world, debts like that are paid back tenfold."

Vincent started the engine, shifting the heavy vehicle into gear. The nightmare inside the house was over, but a new chapter of absolute protection had begun. He would ensure that no shadow—legal, financial, or physical—would ever touch Lila again.
