Chapter 18 - The Bait in the HarborThe Port of Savannah was a sprawling, chaotic labyrinth of towering container cranes, brightly colored shipping boxes, and the constant, deafening roar of diesel engines moving heavy cargo off massive transatlantic freighters. It was midnight, and a dense, humid coastal fog rolled in off the Atlantic, blanketing the docks in an eerie, ghostly white veil.

Parked discreetly inside an unmarked black SUV near Berth 14, Vincent Moretti watched the live surveillance feeds on his dashboard monitor. Beside him sat Marcus, holding a military-grade encrypted radio receiver.
“The Chicago strike team just docked their private charter boat at Slip 7,” Marcus reported quietly, his eyes tracking thermal signatures on the tablet screen. “Six operatives, heavily armed with suppressed submachine gunds and encrypted comms. They’re moving directly toward Container Sector C-4—the exact location where we planted the fake digital drive containing the compromised Moretti Holdings operational files.”
Vincent adjusted his dark leather driving gloves, his face carved from unyielding stone. “Let them take the drive, Marcus. Do not interfere until they reach the perimeter fence.”
“Understood, Boss.”
Through the infrared lenses, Vincent watched as six dark, tactical figures crept stealthily between towering stacks of steel shipping containers. They moved with professional military precision, scanning the shadows for guards. But the docks were completely deserted—at least, according to the superficial appearance of the harbor.
The lead Chicago operative, a scarred veteran named Viktor, reached the designated container, pulled a specialized electronic bypass tool from his tactical vest, and effortlessly popped the mechanical seal on the heavy steel doors. Inside sat a single, locked titanium briefcase resting on a wooden pallet.
Viktor smiled under his night-vision goggles, grabbing the briefcase and signaling his men to withdraw. “Mission accomplished,” he whispered into his comms. “Data secured. Let’s get back to the charter boat before Moretti’s security even realizes—.”
CLACK-WHIRR.
Suddenly, towering stadium floodlights mounted atop the surrounding crane towers blazed to life with blinding intensity, turning the foggy night into broad daylight. Simultaneously, heavy steel drop-gates slammed shut at both ends of the pier, cutting off all avenues of escape.
“Ambush!” Viktor screamed, raising his weapon.
Before the Chicago operatives could fire a single shot, forty of Vincent’s elite enforcers stepped out from behind the container stacks, their assault rifles locked and loaded, forming an impenetrable, circular firing squad.
Marcus’s amplified voice boomed across the entire harbor through the PA system: “Drop your weapons on the ground and kick them toward the center. Any sudden movement, and you feed the sharks by morning.”
Viktor stared around in utter disbelief. There was no escape. The brilliant trap had snapped shut with terrifying perfection. He slowly lowered his submachine gun, letting it hit the concrete with a metallic clatter, followed immediately by his men.

Vincent stepped out from the shadows of the SUV, walking slowly toward the center of the pier. His dark overcoat billowed slightly in the salty coastal breeze. He stopped five feet from the terrified Chicago operative, staring down at him with absolute, freezing contempt.
“Tell Salvatore Rossi,” Vincent said softly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent harbor, “that his little digital package has been delivered. And tell him I’m coming to collect the rest of his empire in person.”
