Chapter 25 - The Trap Springs in the CourtyardThe freezing rain fell in sheets across the grand stone courtyard of the Buckhead estate, washing over the marble fountains and turning the manicured lawns into dark, shimmering mirrors under the pale moonlight.

The lone operative—Viktor Sterling—moved stealthily along the shadowed perimeter of the veranda, his gloved hand resting lightly on the suppressed pistol tucked beneath his tactical raincoat. He was a professional who had neutralized targets across three continents without leaving a single trace. To him, Vincent Moretti was just another provincial American crime boss who operated out of an over-glorified mansion.
Sterling reached the heavy glass-paneled double doors leading into the estate’s ground-floor library—the designated access point to the main server mainframe. He pulled a specialized digital scanner from his pocket, pressing it against the electronic lock panel.
BEEP. BEEP. CLICK.
The heavy library door swung silently inward, revealing a dark, cavernous hallway illuminated only by the faint, rhythmic blinking of server racks down the corridor.
Sterling stepped inside, drawing his suppressed weapon, scanning the shadows with cold, calculating eyes. He took three silent paces forward down the long hallway—and suddenly, every hair on the back of his neck stood up.
CLACK-HISS.
Simultaneously, blinding stadium-grade floodlights erupted around the interior courtyard and hallways, turning the pitch-black interior into blazing, merciless daylight. Simultaneously, heavy steel security shutters slammed down over every window and door, sealing the hallway into an inescapable iron tomb.
“You’re walking very softly for an uninvited guest,” a deep, resonant voice echoed coldly from the shadows ahead.
Sterling snapped his weapon up, aiming toward the source of the sound. Standing ten feet away at the end of the hallway, hands casually slipped into the pockets of his dark wool coat, was Vincent Moretti.
Before Sterling could pull the trigger, four red laser dots appeared simultaneously on his chest. From the upper balconies and hidden wall alcoves, twelve of Vincent’s elite enforcers stepped out, their assault rifles locked and trained directly on the operative's vital organs.
“Drop the weapon,” Dante Moretti ordered sharply from the upper landing, his voice ringing with absolute finality.
Sterling stared around in stunned disbelief. He had walked right into an apex predator's den, completely blind to the trap until it was far too late. Slowly, deliberately, he opened his hand, letting his suppressed pistol clatter onto the hardwood floor.

Vincent walked slowly forward, stopping just an arm’s length away from the captured Interpol operative. His face was carved from uncompromising granite.
“Tell your European syndicate masters,” Vincent whispered, his voice dropping into a register so cold it made the air feel frozen, “that if they ever send another ghost into my house, I won't send him back in handcuffs. I’ll send him back in ashes.”
