Chapter 14 - The Coliseum and the Empty Seats

Saturday morning arrived with breathtaking clarity. The sky over Hartwell State was a brilliant, cloudless cobalt blue, and the sprawling campus coliseum was packed to absolute capacity. Ten thousand people—graduating seniors in black robes, proud parents holding camcorders, faculty members in crimson and blue academic regalia—filled the massive arena with a low, vibrating hum of celebratory energy.

Backstage in the staging area, the atmosphere was a mix of nervous excitement and academic pageantry. I stood near the side entrance wearing my custom master’s robe and golden velvet hood, reviewing my speech notes one last time.

"You ready for this, star of the show?" Curtis asked, walking over wearing a remarkably sharp rented tuxedo that miraculously didn't look like it was choking him. Donna stood beside him in an elegant emerald pantsuit, giving me an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I smiled, adjusting my mortarboard cap.

Down in the VIP seating section near the front rows, reserved specifically for university benefactors, distinguished alumni, and special guests, sat Uncle Arthur, beaming proudly with a program clutched tightly in his hands.

A few rows back, half-hidden behind a massive pillar that blocked their view of the stage, sat Paul, Susan, and Megan. They had come after all—not out of familial pride, but out of sheer, desperate social obligation, terrified that if they stayed home, their absence at the graduation of Hartwell's most talked-about economics graduate would raise too many uncomfortable questions at the country club. They sat in stony, humiliated silence, refusing to look left or right, trapped in the very front row seats they had once laughed off as impossible.

At precisely ten o'clock, the university president stepped up to the grand podium, adjusted the microphone, and welcomed the graduating class of 2026. After a stirring opening address celebrating the university's academic achievements, the president paused, smiled broadly, and gestured toward the side of the stage.

"And now, ladies and gentlemen, it is my distinct honor to introduce our official staff and student representative—an extraordinary scholar who has spent the last nine years mastering the science of economics while dedicating her mornings to the meticulous care of this very campus. Please welcome Ms. Chloe Watson."

The coliseum erupted. Ten thousand people rose to their feet as one, filling the massive arena with a deafening, thunderous wave of applause that shook the steel rafters overhead.

I took a deep breath, smoothed down the front of my black academic robe, and walked steadily across the polished wooden stage toward the podium.
