Following the symposium, Uncle Arthur invited me out for breakfast at our favorite local diner. As we waited for our pancakes, Arthur pulled a small, leather-bound notebook from his briefcase and placed it gently on the Formica table.
"What's this, Uncle Arthur?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"This," Arthur smiled warmly, "was your grandfather’s original ledger from his small business back in the seventies. Before he passed, he told me to give it to the Watson who understood what real labor looked like."
I opened the cover. Written in my grandfather’s crisp, meticulous handwriting on the very first page was a quote: “A business is only as strong as the hands that clean its floors when nobody is watching.”
