Chapter 58 - The Final Accounting

As the academic year wound down to a peaceful close, a quiet evening arrived that felt like the true culmination of my journey. I sat alone on the balcony of my home, sipping herbal tea while watching the twilight settle over the peaceful Hartwell State campus.
My phone rested face down on the wooden table, completely silent. No desperate calls from Susan, no frantic demands from Megan, no lingering ghosts from the past. The ledger of my life was balanced down to the very last decimal point. Every debt had been settled, every asset accounted for, and every closed door replaced by wide-open horizons.
Uncle Arthur called briefly around eight o'clock just to wish me a restful summer.
"Enjoy your break, Dr. Watson," Arthur chuckled warmly. "The department is thriving, the scholarship fund is fully endowed, and your father’s old ghost town has finally quieted down completely."
"Thank you, Uncle Arthur," I smiled into the receiver. "For holding the truth when nobody else would."
