Instead of retreating into quiet isolation during the winter holidays, our department—in partnership with the Foundational Hands Scholarship Committee—launched the annual "Holiday Uplift Initiative," providing emergency financial support, warm winter clothing, and educational book grants to dozens of campus facilities workers and their families.
On a freezing Saturday morning just days before Christmas, our volunteer team gathered in the student union cafeteria to distribute winter care packages. Curtis and Donna were right in the thick of it, hauling heavy boxes of supplies with boundless energy, while I personally handed out book vouchers to non-traditional students balancing finals with custodial shifts.
A middle-aged custodial worker named Marcus, who had been working the night shift at Whitmore Hall for six years while saving money to put his daughter through college, walked up to my table holding his voucher packet. His eyes were bright with unshed tears.
"Dr. Watson, I don't even know how to thank you," Marcus said, his voice trembling slightly. "My daughter just received her acceptance letter to Hartwell’s nursing program, and this book grant covers her entire first-semester lab fees. For years, I thought people like us were invisible on this campus. You proved that someone was finally watching out for us."
