Chapter 82 - The Shadow of the Past in Ohio

While my professional trajectory soared across international borders, the residual ripples of my family's collapse continued to echo quietly back home in Ohio.

Uncle Arthur dropped by my campus office late that Friday afternoon, carrying a manila folder containing local property deeds and municipal records. He sank into the leather armchair opposite my desk and let out a heavy sigh.

"Your father’s former insurance agency building downtown finally sold at a public tax auction," Arthur said, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "The new buyers are completely gutting the executive suite where Paul used to hold court like a petty monarch. They're turning it into a community retraining center for displaced blue-collar workers."

I leaned back in my ergonomic chair, gazing out at the bustling campus quad. "A fitting transformation, Uncle Arthur. Out with the old, locked doors of exclusion, and in with open classrooms."

"Indeed," Arthur agreed softly. "Enjoy your weekend, Professor. You’ve built a remarkable house out of the ashes they left behind."
