Chapter 22 - Uncle Arthur’s Revelation

Two days after my confrontation with Paul, Uncle Arthur invited me out for breakfast at a quiet diner on the outskirts of town. It was the same diner where I used to sit during my undergraduate years, nursing a single cup of coffee while reviewing microeconomics notes between morning custodial shifts.

Arthur slid a thick envelope across the Formica table as soon as I sat down.

"What’s this, Uncle Arthur?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Your father tried to mortgage his primary residential property last week to cover some lingering debts and legal penalties from the trust fund settlement," Arthur said, sipping his black coffee with a grim expression. "The bank rejected his loan application outright. His credit score has cratered, and his corporate pension is tied up in endless administrative reviews."

I opened the envelope. Inside were certified property deeds and financial audits confirming that Paul Watson’s financial fortress was effectively bankrupt.

"I didn't want you to feel sorry for him," Arthur continued earnestly, meeting my eyes. "I just wanted you to know that the invisible hands your father relied on—loans, favors, social posturing—finally stopped holding him up. He built his entire life on sand, Chloe. You built yours on granite."

I slid the documents back into the envelope and placed them neatly inside my bag. I didn't feel joy at my father's financial ruin, nor did I feel sorrow. I felt the profound, balanced equilibrium of economic justice. Actions had consequences. Balance sheets always had to balance out in the end.

"How’s Megan handling it?" I asked, stirring cream into my coffee.

Arthur snorted softly. "Megan is currently trying to convince her husband, Todd, to relocate three states away so she can escape the gossip at her country club. Todd, naturally, is completely bewildered and just wants to play golf in peace."

We shared a quiet, genuine laugh—the kind of lighthearted laughter that comes only when old ghosts have finally been laid to rest.
