Chapter 25 - The Invitation to London
When spring arrived, bringing blooming cherry blossoms and warm sunlight back to the Hartwell campus, an international invitation arrived in my faculty mailbox. The European Association of Labor Economists formally invited me to present my award-winning research paper at their annual academic symposium in London, England.
The conference brought together leading economic minds from across the globe to debate the future of labor economics, automated infrastructure, and invisible workforce contributions.
As I packed my bags in my apartment, I paused to look at the vintage coffee mug on my desk and the framed photograph of Donna and Curtis grinning beside my master’s graduation stage. My life had completely transformed, yet the core principles remained unchanged: integrity, resilience, and absolute refusal to be defined by anyone else’s limitations.
The flight to London was smooth. Standing at the podium of the grand international conference hall in London, looking out over hundreds of distinguished economists from dozens of countries, I didn't feel nervous. I felt grounded, confident, and entirely in my element.

When I finished my presentation, the international audience responded with a sustained, enthusiastic standing applause. As I stepped off the stage, a senior economist from the London School of Economics approached me, offering his card and asking if I would consider a postdoctoral research collaboration after completing my doctorate.
The world had opened its doors wide, and I walked through them with my head held high.
