Chapter 10 - The Trap is Set

Thursday night descended upon Marrow Hill like a suffocating shroud of heavy fog rolling in from the river. The streetlamps along Alder Street flickered yellow against the damp asphalt, casting long, eerie shadows across the brick facades of the historic district.
Inside Ashby & Co., the workshop was quiet. The single desk lamp shed a warm, focused circle of light over the cutting table, where Karen sat sewing the final hem of a bespoke wool coat. She moved with absolute, meditative precision, her needle gliding effortlessly through the heavy fabric. She knew what was coming. Ambrose’s intelligence network had provided not only the audio recording of Julian Cross’s order, but also the exact names and license plate numbers of the two local enforcers hired to carry out the arson.
At precisely 11:45 PM, a nondescript black van crept down Alder Street with its headlights turned off, parking fifty yards away from the shop. Two masked figures stepped out, moving quickly and stealthily toward the basement stairwell door. Each man carried a heavy metal canister of industrial accelerant.
"Make it quick, make it thorough," whispered one of them, his voice muffled by a black ski mask as he jimmied the latch of the basement door. "Cross wants nothing left standing."
They pushed the door open, slipping silently into the damp, fabric-scented stairwell. They crept down the wooden steps, their flashlights cutting narrow beams through the gloom. They reached the main workshop floor, raising their canisters to douse the cutting tables in gasoline.
"Drop the canisters," a calm, resonant voice echoed through the dark basement.
The two arsonists froze, whirling around with their flashlights sweeping wildly across the room. Standing near the tall mirror—with the old black cloth completely removed—was Karen Ashby. She wasn't cowering. She sat upright in her wooden chair, her sewing shears resting casually on the table before her, her scarred face illuminated sharply by the desk lamp.
"What the—? Grab her!" one enforcer shouted, lunging forward with a canister.
Before he could take two steps, the heavy oak basement door at the top of the stairs banged wide open. A beam of blinding light flooded the stairwell, followed by the heavy, measured clack of leather-soled shoes descending the wooden steps.
Four burly men in tailored charcoal suits—Ambrose Calvano’s elite security detail—stepped into the basement, completely blocking all exits. Behind them stood Ambrose himself, his silver hair neatly combed, his hands resting calmly inside his coat pockets.

The two arsonists dropped their canisters, realizing in a single horrifying second that they hadn't walked into a vulnerable target—they had walked directly into an executioner's trap.
"You boys looking for a light?" Ambrose asked softly, a dangerous, humorless smile touching his lips. "Because I think you'll find it's a bit too hot in here for your health."
