Chapter 18 - The Offer from Paris

The morning after the Manhattan Fashion Gala, the suite at the grand hotel overlooking Central Park felt less like a temporary lodging and more like the epicenter of the fashion world. From 7:00 AM onward, Elena had been answering a relentless stream of phone calls from international buyers, celebrity agents, and major retail executives, all clamoring for exclusive distribution rights to the Ashby & Co. collection.

At 9:00 AM, a personal courier delivered a sealed, heavy parchment envelope bearing the golden wax seal of Maison de L’Aura, one of the oldest and most prestigious luxury fashion houses in Paris, France.

Karen sat at her desk, carefully breaking the wax seal with her letter opener. She unfolded the heavy parchment, reading through the crisp, elegant cursive written in both French and English.

The letter was signed by Jean-Luc Moreau, the legendary octogenarian director of Maison de L’Aura. It wasn't a standard business inquiry or a distribution proposal. It was a formal invitation for Karen to come to Paris as a guest creative director to co-design their upcoming centennial spring collection—an honor bestowed upon only a handful of visionary designers in history.

Elena walked over with a cup of fresh coffee, setting it down gently on the desk. "Let me guess. Another boutique in Soho wanting a collaboration?"

"Not quite," Karen said quietly, sliding the parchment across the desk toward her. "Paris."

Elena’s eyes widened as she scanned the signature at the bottom of the page. She dropped her notepad onto the rug with a soft thud. "Paris?! Maison de L’Aura?! Karen, that’s... that’s the holy grail of fashion! They never invite outsiders! Especially American designers!"

Karen leaned back in her chair, gazing out the large window at the crisp autumn trees of Central Park. The world had suddenly grown infinitely large, opening doors she had never even dared to dream of when she was sewing in her damp basement on Alder Street.

"What are you going to do?" Elena asked, her voice filled with a mixture of excitement and awe. "Are you going to accept?"

Karen smiled, a calm, reflective expression crossing her face. "I'm going to accept," she said softly. "But with one condition."

"What condition?"

"I'm not moving to Paris," Karen replied firmly. "Ashby & Co. stays right where it is, on Alder Street in Marrow Hill. If Maison de L’Aura wants to collaborate, they can send their master tailors to my workshop, or we can work digitally. My roots are in Marrow Hill. That’s where my family is, that’s where my history is, and that’s where my workshop belongs."

Elena beamed, shaking her head with affectionate disbelief. "You really are incorruptible, aren't you?"

"I just know who I am, Elena," Karen said simply. "And I know what it took to get here."
