Chapter 44 - The Shadow of a Final Threat

While Karen was celebrated in Paris, a final, desperate remnant of the old criminal syndicate was making one last, foolish move back in the United States. A disgraced former associate of Viktor Radek, hiding out in a rundown motel near the state border, believed that with Karen away in France, Marrow Hill and the Calvano syndicate headquarters would be vulnerable to a retaliatory strike.

Late on a Wednesday night, three armed thugs rented a battered pickup truck and drove into Marrow Hill, planning to make a symbolic strike against Ashby & Co. before fleeing the country.

They parked down the block from the boutique, pulling ski masks over their faces and grabbing a heavy crowbar to smash the front glass door.

They didn't know that Ambrose Calvano’s intelligence network never slept.

Before the thugs could even step out of their truck, two unmarked black SUVs boxed them in completely from front and back. Syndicate enforcers swarmed the vehicle in absolute silence, dragging the three terrified men out onto the asphalt before they could even touch their weapons.

Ambrose stepped out of the lead vehicle, adjusting his coat cuffs. He looked down at the cowering thugs with cold, absolute disdain.

"Tell whoever sent you," Ambrose said smoothly, his voice chillingly calm, "that Marrow Hill belongs to the people who built it. And anyone who tries to scratch even a single brick of this town will find themselves sleeping with the fishes permanently."

The threat was handled swiftly, quietly, and completely without drama. By morning, the streets of Alder Street were clean, sunny, and peaceful, completely unaware that a final storm had been averted.
