Chapter 34 - Shadows of a Forgotten Past

Though the corporate enemies had been defeated and the underworld threats neutralized, life in Marrow Hill continued to evolve in unexpected ways. One crisp autumn morning, while sorting through historical property deeds in her private office, Karen uncovered a dusty, leather-bound box tucked away in the back of her father’s old desk.
Inside the box were personal letters and photographs dating back twenty-two years—the exact period when the tragic fire had claimed her family home and left her scarred. Among the letters was correspondence addressed to her father from a man named Marcus Reed—an old business partner who had mysteriously vanished right around the time of the fire.
Karen stared at the faded handwriting, a sudden curiosity sparking in her chest. Marcus Reed wasn't just a business partner; according to the letters, he had helped her father design the original architectural blueprints for the historic east district block.
She picked up her secure satellite phone and dialed Ambrose Calvano. "Ambrose, I need you to run a background check on someone for me. A man named Marcus Reed. He disappeared from Marrow Hill twenty-two years ago."
There was a brief pause on the other line. "Marcus Reed?" Ambrose repeated, his tone turning instantly grave. "Karen, where did you hear that name?"
"It’s in my father’s old letters," Karen replied, sensing the shift in Ambrose's demeanor. "What do you know about him?"

"Reed didn't just disappear, Karen," Ambrose said slowly. "People thought he ran off with municipal development funds. But my brother—the man your father saved at the docks—always suspected Reed was murdered to cover up the illegal land grabs that started the entire district crisis."
Karen’s breath caught in her throat. The fire that scarred her face wasn't just a tragic accident. It might have been a calculated murder.
