Chapter 11 - The Confession Tape

The two hired enforcers didn't put up a fight. When you find yourself cornered by Ambrose Calvano's elite security team in a soundproof basement at midnight, resistance isn't bravery; it's suicide. Within seconds, both men were pinned against the concrete wall, their heavy metal canisters confiscated, and their hands zip-tied securely behind their backs.

Karen stood up slowly from her cutting table, smoothing down her skirt. She walked over to the corner where the two terrified men were trembling under the cold gaze of the syndicate guards. She didn't raise her voice. She didn't need to.

"Who hired you?" Karen asked, her dark eyes piercing straight through their masks.

"We... we don't know what you're talking about!" stammered the taller enforcer, his voice cracking with panic. "We just picked the wrong door! It was a mistake—"

Ambrose stepped forward, pulling a sleek digital recorder from his coat pocket and pressing play. The tiny speaker in the quiet basement instantly broadcast Julian Cross’s unmistakable voice across the room: "Find me someone outside the corporate structure... I want that basement burned to the ground while she's inside it."

The color drained entirely from the enforcers' faces. The audio was crystal clear, capturing every malicious syllable of the corporate CEO’s command.

"That... that don't prove nothing!" the enforcer gasped, though his defiance had completely evaporated.

"It proves conspiracy to commit arson, attempted murder, and corporate racketeering," Ambrose said smoothly, walking up to them and placing the recorder back inside his coat. "Now, you have two choices. Choice number one: you spend the next thirty years in a federal penitentiary taking the fall for a billionaire who would sell your organs on the black market to save his stock price. Choice number two: you sign a formal, videotaped federal witness affidavit detailing every dollar Julian Cross paid you to execute this hit."

The two men exchanged a desperate, fleeting glance. Survival instinct kicked in instantly.

"We'll sign," the shorter one choked out. "We'll sign whatever you want. Cross gave us fifty grand up front through an offshore shell company. We've got the bank receipts on our phones."

Karen looked down at them, a cold, satisfied calm washing over her. "Smart choice," she said quietly. "Get them out of here, Ambrose. Let the federal prosecutor have his new centerpiece."

By 3:00 AM, the affidavit and all associated digital evidence were securely transmitted via encrypted channel to the office of the state attorney general and the lead federal prosecutor handling the Meridian Financial investigations. The trap was no longer just set—it had been sprung, and the jaws of justice were clamping down hard on Julian Cross’s neck.
