Chapter 12 - The Fall of the Titan

Friday morning arrived with an icy rain beating relentlessly against the glass facade of the Meridian Financial Group tower. Inside his top-floor executive suite, Julian Cross was pacing back and forth across the imported wool rug, his nerves frayed, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night. The emergency midnight board meeting had ended in disaster; institutional investors had officially initiated proceedings to freeze his corporate assets and strip him of his voting shares, citing gross negligence and impending federal indictments.
"Where are they?" Julian muttered furiously to himself, staring at his silent phone. "Those idiots should have finished the job hours ago! Why hasn't the shop burned?"
Before he could dial his contacts again, the heavy oak double doors of his office banged open.
Julian whirled around, expecting to see his lead strategist Marcus Vance with updates on the board vote. Instead, striding into the room were four federal marshals in tactical vests, accompanied by two state detectives in dark trench coats and the lead federal prosecutor carrying a thick manila portfolio.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. He forced a rigid, arrogant facade, standing tall behind his mahogany desk. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private corporate office! You cannot enter without a warrant—"
The lead prosecutor didn't flinch. He tossed a formal document directly onto Julian’s desk, right over his pristine leather blotter.
"Federal arrest warrant, Mr. Cross," the prosecutor said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "You are being charged with conspiracy to commit arson, attempted murder, interstate wire fraud, and racketeering."
Julian stared at the paper as if it were a venomous snake. "Arson? Murder? This is absolute insanity! I am Julian Cross! I run this city's financial sector! You have no proof of anything!"
"We have your voice," the prosecutor replied calmly, stepping closer. "We have the encrypted wire transfer receipts from your offshore shell accounts to the two men you hired to burn down Ashby & Co. last night. And more importantly, those two men are currently downstairs in federal custody, signing confessions that implicate you as the sole mastermind of the operation."
The blood rushed out of Julian’s face so fast he staggered backward, catching himself against the edge of his executive desk. His knees felt weak; his chest tightened as the terrifying reality of his total destruction crashed down upon him. He had spent his entire life believing that money and power made him invincible, that human lives were merely disposable assets on a balance sheet. Now, those exact assets had turned into iron bars closing around him.

As the federal marshals stepped forward and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists, the blinding flash of cameras echoed from the doorway. Reporters and financial journalists, tipped off by the attorney general's press office, had flooded the hallway.
Julian Cross tried to shield his face with his cuffed hands, his immaculate suit rumpled, his dignity shredded into a million pieces, as he was marched out of his own skyscraper in front of the entire city he had tried to conquer.
