Chapter 21 - The Whispering Campaign

The attack didn't come with the roar of demolition equipment or the threat of fire; it came in the silent, invisible currents of the digital world. Two weeks after Karen’s return from Manhattan, a synchronized wave of hit pieces, fabricated online reviews, and malicious social media campaigns hit Ashby & Co. simultaneously across multiple platforms.

Anonymous forums and high-society gossip blogs suddenly flooded the internet with wild, baseless accusations: claiming that Karen’s award-winning designs were plagiarized from European fashion houses, that her bespoke garments were manufactured in overseas sweatshops using exploited labor, and that her boutique was merely a front for money laundering linked to underworld syndicates.

Elena burst into Karen’s workshop on a Tuesday morning, holding her tablet out with shaking hands. "Karen! Look at this! It’s everywhere!"

Karen looked up from her sewing table, calmly wiping her hands on her apron. She took the tablet and scrolled through the vitriolic articles, fake customer complaints, and coordinated Twitter smear campaigns.

"They're trying to destroy the brand's credibility," Karen noted, her voice completely calm, devoid of panic. "If they can't burn the building down, they want to burn the name."

"Who is behind this?" Elena demanded, her voice trembling with frustration. "Is it Victoria Sterling? Is it some jealous designer from New York?"

"No," Karen said, her dark eyes narrowing thoughtfully. "This isn't the work of a fashion designer. This has the signature of international logistics. It’s too coordinated, too heavily funded." She walked over to her secure satellite phone and dialed Ambrose Calvano’s direct line.

Within minutes, Ambrose was on the line. When Karen briefed him on the digital smear campaign, the syndicate boss let out a low, dangerous growl.

"Viktor Radek," Ambrose said without hesitation. "We intercepted chatter yesterday from an encrypted server originating in Eastern Europe. Radek is the man who backed Julian Cross's offshore accounts. When Cross went down, Radek lost millions in syndicate capital. He blames you for the federal freeze."

"So he's trying to assassinate my character instead of my life," Karen said quietly.

"Radek thinks he can wage a silent war from behind a computer screen," Ambrose replied coldly. "He doesn't realize that in Marrow Hill, we trace every whisper back to its source. Give me twenty-four hours, Karen. I’ll find out which server farm is hosting these bots, and we’ll cut the head off this snake once and for all."
