Chapter 26 - The Whispers of a New Rivalry

The autumn chill settled deep into the cobblestones of Marrow Hill, yet inside Ashby & Co., the atmosphere was vibrant with creative energy. Karen Ashby stood before her main cutting table, her fingers expertly guiding a pair of silver shears through layers of deep crimson silk. The victory over Viktor Radek had cemented her reputation not merely as a local artisan, but as an untouchable force in the fashion world. However, peace in a city built on old blood and shifting alliances was never permanent.

Late that afternoon, the shop bell chimed, interrupting the rhythmic hum of sewing machines. A tall man in a bespoke navy suit stepped inside, his sharp hazel eyes scanning the boutique with cold calculation. He did not look like a customer; he looked like a predator assessing a new hunting ground.

"Can I help you?" Karen asked, not looking up immediately from her work.

"Miss Ashby, I presume," the man said, his voice smooth, carrying a subtle, aristocratic cadence that reeked of old money and new ambitions. "My name is Alistair Vance. No relation to the late judge, I assure you. I represent Vanguard Global Holdings out of Boston."

Karen finally raised her eyes, her dark gaze locking onto his. "Vanguard Global. That sounds remarkably similar to Meridian Financial. And we all know how well things turned out for Julian Cross."

Alistair smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes. It was a calculated, polished expression designed to disarm. "Cross was a crude amateur who relied on brute force and sloppy shell companies. Vanguard operates on a completely different level, Miss Ashby. We don't want to bulldoze your historic district. We want to buy a controlling stake in your brand and turn Ashby & Co. into a global luxury conglomerate."

Karen set her shears down on the oak table with a deliberate, echoing clack. "My brand is not for sale, Mr. Vance."

"Everything is for sale, Miss Ashby," Alistair replied softly, stepping closer to the counter. "It is simply a matter of finding the right pressure point. We wouldn't want an unfortunate series of international trademark disputes to suddenly tie up your upcoming European debut in Paris, would we?"

Karen didn't blink. She looked at him with the same unflinching intensity she had given Preston Hail and Julian Cross. "If Vanguard wants a war, Mr. Vance, tell your board to pack heavy. Because I'm finished negotiating with men who think they can buy what I built with my own hands."

Alistair’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second before he turned and walked out, leaving a cold draft in his wake. The battle for Marrow Hill was far from over.
