Chapter 10 - The Unraveling of the EmpireWithin forty-eight hours of our meeting in Sarah’s office, the documents Mark provided were authenticated by federal forensic accountants.

The impact was instantaneous and catastrophic for Richard Bennett. Armed with the Cayman Islands access codes and the detailed paper trail of hidden asset transfers, federal prosecutors moved in with lightning speed. Judge Arthur Vance—no relation to Sarah—issued an immediate freeze on all remaining international holdings associated with Bennett & Associates.
The once-untouchable real estate empire officially dissolved into bankruptcy court.
I sat in my home office late one evening, sipping chamomile tea while reviewing the final draft of Ethan’s newly established educational and medical trust. The numbers on the page were staggering—more than enough to guarantee that my son would receive the absolute best physical therapy, specialized education, and lifelong security, regardless of what happened to me or anyone else.
My phone rang, breaking the quiet hum of the house. It was an unfamiliar local number, but I answered it anyway.
“Mrs. Bennett?” a sharp, formal voice asked.
“This is Claire,” I replied cautiously.
“My name is Detective Miller with the Columbus Police Department,” the voice continued. “I’m calling to inform you that a warrant was executed earlier this evening at the residence of Richard Bennett. During the search, Mr. Bennett attempted to flee the premises and was taken into custody on additional charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering. He is currently being held at the county detention center without bail pending his arraignment tomorrow morning.”
A strange wave of calm washed over me. There was no rush of adrenaline, no spike of fear, and no lingering sense of triumph. Just a profound, settling peace.
“Thank you for letting me know, Detective,” I said evenly.
“We also received notification from your husband’s legal representation,” Miller added. “Mark Bennett has officially signed all final paperwork relinquishing his contested assets and waiving all future claims. The divorce decree will be signed by the judge tomorrow morning, officially dissolving the marriage.”
“Understood. Thank you.”

I hung up the phone, set it gently on the wooden desk, and leaned back in my chair. I looked out the window into the dark, star-lit night. Downstairs, I could hear the faint, comforting sounds of Ethan humming to himself as he finished his homework at the kitchen table.
The storm that had threatened to tear our lives apart had finally spent its fury, leaving behind clean air and solid ground.
