On Monday morning, I walked into the corner office of David Harrison, the senior managing director of our firm. David was a sharp, no-nonsense executive who had always respected my analytical rigor but had often wondered why I never pursued higher leadership roles.
“Claire,” David said, gesturing to the leather guest chair across from his immaculate mahogany desk. “I saw the morning reports about the Bennett indictment. I know it’s been a turbulent month for you personally, but your name has been circulating in executive review boards for a very different reason.”
“Oh?” I raised an eyebrow, taking a seat.
“Our board is restructuring our forensic auditing division,” David continued, leaning forward with a calculating smile. “We need someone with an uncompromising eye for hidden assets, complex corporate fraud, and offshore shell companies. Someone who isn't afraid to dig deep when everyone else is looking away. We want to promote you to Director of Financial Forensics.”
The offer was staggering—not just in terms of the substantial salary increase, which would add an extra layer of financial armor to Ethan’s trust, but in the validation it represented.
