Chapter 46 - Whispers in the ColdFar away from the warmth of our Columbus home, winter arrived early in Cincinnati.

Inside her desolate apartment, Eleanor Bennett lay resting on her narrow bed, staring up at the peeling paint of the ceiling. The radiator hissed a feeble, rattling sound against the freezing December wind rattling the windowpanes.

Her phone lay on the nightstand, entirely silent. Mark had called briefly three days earlier to say he couldn't afford to visit for the holidays due to an extra double shift at the warehouse.

Eleanor closed her eyes, a bitter tear tracing a dry track down her wrinkled cheek. She realized the terrible cost of her lifetime of arrogance. She had spent decades looking down on everyone else, believing her family's wealth and social standing made them untouchable. Now, she was entirely forgotten—abandoned by society, neglected by her son, and haunted by the memory of the daughter-in-law and disabled grandson she had so cruelly cast aside.

The empire of the Bennett family had vanished completely from the earth, leaving behind nothing but the cold, bitter ash of their own making.
