Chapter 8 - Whispers in the Corporate CorridorTwo weeks later, the fallout from the Bennett family scandal hit the front page of the Columbus Dispatch.

"LOCAL REAL ESTATE MOGUL FACES FEDERAL FRAUD INDICTMENT; FAMILY EMPIRE COLLAPSES," screamed the bold headlines across the business section. The article detailed how Richard Bennett’s premier development firm, Bennett & Associates, had been shuttered by federal regulators following an anonymous whistleblower report that exposed over a decade of systematic tax evasion, zoning bribery, and offshore asset concealment.
Sitting at my desk at the financial analytics firm downtown, I stared at the digital copy of the newspaper on my dual monitors. The fallout had been swift and merciless. Richard Bennett was currently out on a steep million-dollar bail, holed up in a rapidly depleting estate while his high-priced legal team tried to negotiate a plea deal that might keep an elderly man out of federal prison.
My phone buzzed on the desk. It was Sarah Vance.
“Did you see the morning paper?” Sarah’s voice came through the receiver, crisp and triumphant.
“Just looking at it now,” I replied, spinning my ergonomic chair toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the frozen skyline.
“Well, the drama isn't over yet,” Sarah chuckled lightly. “Mark’s personal divorce attorney just reached out to my office with a formal proposal. He’s completely destitute, his father has cut him off entirely, and he’s hoping to negotiate a quick, quiet settlement before the criminal charges formally rope him into the federal indictment as an active co-conspirator.”
“What does he want?” I asked, keeping my tone strictly professional.
“Everything is already locked down on our end,” Sarah assured me. “The house is yours, full custody is yours, and his financial liabilities are completely walled off from your assets thanks to the pre-filing forensics we ran. But Mark wants to sign away all parental rights to future estates, and in exchange, he’s begging for a brief, supervised sit-down meeting with you. He claims he has something vital to tell you about Richard’s hidden assets—assets that might secure an even larger settlement for Ethan's future medical trust.”
I paused, chewing the inside of my cheek. The thought of seeing Mark made my skin crawl, but the mention of securing a guaranteed, untouchable medical trust for Ethan’s long-term care caught my attention.
“Where and when?” I asked.

“Tomorrow evening,” Sarah replied. “Neutral ground. My office conference room, with a security guard stationed outside the door. No emotional outbursts, just business.”
“Set it up,” I said.
