Chapter 2 - The Ultimatum and the Hidden Leverage

Richard stepped forward, his chest puffed out with indignant authority, channeling the patriarch who was used to bullying everyone into submission.

“Listen to me, young lady,” Richard barked, pointing a thick finger in my direction. “Mark is my son, and this house was bought with financial assistance from the family trust that I built. You are standing here running your mouth because your pride is wounded, but let me remind you of something: without our family, you and that boy would have nothing. Mark makes the real money. Mark carries this family. You need us far more than we need you.”

That was the mistake.

For years, Richard and Mark had maintained a carefully guarded illusion. Mark always played the downtrodden, hardworking corporate manager who just happened to receive “generous bonuses” and “property investments” from his father’s successful real estate development firm in Columbus. I had always stayed out of their business dealings, focusing on my career as a senior financial analyst and raising Ethan.

I looked at Mark, watching him squirm under his father’s words. He wouldn't look me in the eye. He looked down at the floor, practically shrinking back into his father’s shadow.

And in that exact moment, the final pieces of a puzzle I hadn't even realized I was solving clicked into place.

Three months ago, Mark had asked me to help him organize some digital tax documents for a joint refinancing application. While accessing our shared cloud drive, I had stumbled upon a hidden directory—a series of corporate ledgers, offshore shell companies, and fraudulent asset transfers registered under Richard’s development firm, with Mark listed as the primary signatory and silent beneficiary.

Richard hadn't just been helping Mark out of the goodness of his heart. Mark had been acting as the corporate fall guy, laundering illegal kickbacks and dodging millions in state development taxes through shell companies, while Richard pulled the strings.

I walked over to the kitchen desk, picked up my laptop, and opened the lid. The screen glowed brightly in the dim kitchen light.

“You’re right, Richard,” I said softly, typing a quick password and pulling up a secure encrypted folder. “Mark does carry a lot of things for this family. Especially your illegal tax evasion schemes, your fraudulent zoning bribes, and the millions you've been funneling through offshore accounts to keep your failing construction empire afloat.”

The color drained instantly from Richard’s face. The booming, arrogant patriarch vanished in a split second, replaced by an old man staring down the barrel of a loaded gun.

“What... what did you say?” Richard stammered, taking a half-step back.

Mark’s head snapped up, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic. He lunged across the kitchen island, his hands gripping the edge of the counter. “Claire! Shut your mouth! What are you talking about? Have you lost your mind?”

“I haven't lost my mind, Mark,” I said, turning the laptop screen outward so the glowing financial graphs and federal audit warnings were pointed directly at them. “I’ve just been doing some auditing of my own. You see, while you two have spent your entire lives acting like you’re kings of the world, looking down on everyone else—including your own disabled son—you forgot one very important detail.”

I paused, letting the silence stretch until it was suffocating.

“I am a senior financial forensic analyst. And three months ago, I downloaded every single file from your family server. Every forged signature. Every illegal wire transfer. Every single document the IRS and the state attorney general would love to see.”

Richard let out a harsh, choking sound, grabbing onto the back of a chair to steady himself. “You... you stole corporate documents? That’s illegal! I’ll have you put in prison! I’ll sue you into oblivion!”

“Go ahead,” I smiled coldly. “Sue me. Call the police. Tell them you want to report a theft of documents that prove you’ve been committing federal wire fraud and tax evasion for over a decade. I’m sure the feds will love walking into your country club to arrest you.”
