Chapter 20 - Whispers of the FutureBy late summer, my professional life reached another milestone.

David Harrison called me into his executive office to present the quarterly financial review for the firm’s forensic auditing division. Not only had our team successfully uncovered and recovered millions in illicit corporate assets for several high-profile corporate clients, but our division's profitability had surged by over forty percent under my leadership.

“Claire,” David said, sliding a sleek leather folder across his desk. “The board of directors met yesterday. We’re expanding our operations into the Chicago and Indianapolis markets next quarter, and we want you to spearhead the entire regional expansion as our new Vice President of Forensic Operations.”

I looked at the document, feeling a profound wave of professional satisfaction wash over me. The salary, the prestige, and the intellectual challenge were immense, but what mattered most was the complete financial independence it secured for Ethan and me.

“Thank you, David,” I said steadily, meeting his gaze with absolute confidence. “I’m ready for the challenge.”

“I knew you would be,” David smiled. “Take the weekend to review the contract terms, and let’s finalize it on Monday morning.”

When I drove home that evening, the sun was setting over the Columbus skyline, painting the clouds in brilliant shades of amber and rose. I parked in our driveway, walked up the steps of our beautifully maintained suburban home, and unlocked the front door.

Ethan was in the living room, meticulously assembling a complex model rocket with his physical therapist’s assistant. He looked up as I walked in, his face lighting up with that bright, unclouded smile that always made every hardship worthwhile.

“Mom! You’re home early!” Ethan called out.

“I have amazing news, buddy,” I said, walking over and lifting him up into a gentle, loving hug. “Your college fund just got a whole lot bigger.”
